Centre awaiting report from Bihar

The Centre is expecting a report from Bihar Governor D.Y. Patil on the crisis precipitated by the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. No other party is in a position to form a government in the State at present.

“Reports suggest that Mr. Kumar is reconsidering his decision to resign following the pressure mounted by his party MLAs and workers. However, since he has already tendered his resignation to the Governor, we need to take stock of the situation. Picture will be clear once we receive the report,” said a Home Ministry official.

Mr. Kumar put in his papers on Saturday, a day after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, owning responsibility for a dismal show by the Janata Dal (United) in the State. The JD(U) won only two of the 40 Lok Sabha seats this time round, compared to 20 in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2009.

The JD(U) has 116 members in the State Assembly and after it parted ways with the BJP, it banks on the support of the four Congress, one CPI and five Independent MLAs.
