The CBI on Thursday registered a case in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder of two minor girls in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh.

“Following a notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, we have registered a regular case. A CBI team from the Special Crime Unit, comprising 20 members, will be sent to Badaun on Friday to take over the probe. Forensic experts will also be part of the team,” CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said.

The agency has sought logistical support from the Uttar Pradesh government to facilitate investigations by the team headed by a Deputy Inspector-General rank officer.

Five persons, including two police personnel, have already been arrested by the U.P. Police for their alleged involvement. The CBI will seek their custody for interrogation and make efforts to track down the two other absconding suspects named in the First Information Report registered by the local police.

The two cousins went missing on May 27 and their bodies were found hanging by a tree the next day.
