The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over investigations into the death of former Union Minister Gopinath Munde in a road accident in New Delhi on June 3.
“Following a recommendation from the Union Home Ministry, we are in the process of registering a case based on the Delhi Police’s First Information Report,” said a CBI official on Monday.
Mr. Munde, who after taking charge as the Rural Development Minister, was on his way to board a flight to join celebrations on his victory in the Lok Sabha elections in his constituency at Beed in Maharashtra when he met with an accident. He subsequently succumbed to serious injuries.
His supporters and several political leaders from Maharashtra, including Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, had raised doubts over the incident, demanding a CBI probe.
Union Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra BJP chief Devendra Fadnavis had also met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard.
The Delhi Police had earlier arrested one Gurvinder Singh, the driver of another car involved in the accident, on charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving. The accused was later released on bail.
