The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday questioned Loop Telecom CEO Sandip Basu in connection with the ownership and shareholding pattern of the company. It got its telecom licence in 2008.

Mr. Basu was quizzed on alleged financial dealings with the Essar group, the steel-turned-telecom conglomerate, CBI sources said. The agency suspects that Loop acted as a front for the Essar group in bagging telecom licences in an violation of rules. Mr. Basu was accompanied by some senior officials of the company.

The CBI had in February quizzed Essar Telecom CEO Prashant Ruia in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam. The sources did not rule out yet another round of questioning before the third charge sheet was finalised.

The agency awaits details from Mauritius, to which it had sent Letters Rogatory, seeking to gather information about the ownership patterns of Loop, which had got telecom licences in 22 circles.
