The Vishwa Hindu Parishad urged the Supreme Court on Friday to set up a Constitution Bench to dispose of appeals against the Allahabad High Court decision on the Babri Masjid demolition issue.

The CBI’s appeal challenging the dropping of the conspiracy charges against BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case was a “waste of time,” VHP’s international general secretary Champat Rai said.

“It appears that the CBI wants the Ram Janmabhoomi issue to drag on for another 50 years. That is why it is wasting the time of the apex court. The court should not allow that to happen and should constitute a Constitution Bench to dispose of pending appeals.’’

Reacting to the ban on VHP leader Pravin Togadia entering West Bengal, he said it was “laughable.” He said the VHP’s Hindu Sammelan would be held as scheduled in Raiganj.

The meeting was to commemorate the golden jubilee year of the founding of the VHP. Imposing Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the State just to prevent one person from attending the meeting was an indication of ‘administrative failure.’
