In reply to a question under the Right to Information Act, the Ministry of Home Affairs has released the number of victims killed or injured in unrest in Kashmir from 2012 to 2016. The highest number of incidents was recorded in 2016.

Replying to the question by Kolkata-based activist Shashant Daswani, the Ministry has said 85 civilians were killed in Kashmir during 2016; in 2015, the number stood at five. The casualty figure reached double digits in 2013 when 12 civilians were killed.

Compared to 2015, the number of civilians injured had increased nearly 37 times in 2016. While the number of civilians injured in 2015 was 240, it jumped to 8,932 in 2016.
