The Bhubaneswar police on Saturday said they had registered eight cases in connection with the clash between Congress workers and policemen during Thursday’s rally near the Odisha Assembly here.

Senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik and six other leaders of the party were named in one of the cases, according to Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Nitinjeet Singh.

“We have registered as many as eight criminal cases against the Congress leaders and others under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code,” Mr. Singh told The Hindu . A total of 33 persons had been arrested for indulging in hooliganism and more arrests were likely.

While seven cases had been registered on Thursday, another case had been registered on Friday on the basis of a complaint by Pramila Padhi, the woman constable who was beaten up by the Congress workers before being rescued by some of the protesters.

Thousands of Congress workers had fought a pitched battle with policemen for nearly three hours after the latter prevented them from breaking barricades and going on to picket the Assembly building just after the Congress leaders ended their speech at the rally against the Naveen Patnaik government.

According to Mr. Singh, the Inspector-in-charge of Capital Police Station had registered the main case against Mr. Tytler, Mr. Patnaik and six other leaders, holding them responsible for the hooliganism of their party workers.

Of the remaining six cases, one had been registered against Congress workers for attacking four police personnel engaged for the protection of Mr. Tytler; three cases by media persons and a television channel (two for snatching of cameras and one for damaging an OB van); and two cases had been registered on the basis of the complaints filed by the people residing alongside the Mahatma Gandhi Marg.

In another development, the Congress also filed two complaints with the police, alleging that policemen had beaten up their workers and leaders at the rally venue as well as Congress Bhavan. The complaints were being examined, Mr. Singh said.

Meanwhile, different wings of the ruling Biju Janata Dal organised a meeting in the city to register their protest against the alleged hooliganism of the Congress workers during the rally. The leaders who addressed the gathering demanded the immediate arrest of the Congress leaders.
