A freak incident in which a young officer lost his life in mid-sea during an exercise has led the Indian Navy to remove the Captain of a frontline warship INS Talwar from responsibility and ordering a Board of Inquiry.

The incident occurred on December 29 off the coast of Gujarat when the trainee officer Sub Lieutenant Vipin Kumar died during the sea swimming drill.

The Navy officials said Captain Rahul Parmar was relieved of his command and his Deputy given charge of the ship.

A Board of Inquiry was ordered and appropriate action would be taken after its findings were submitted, the officials said.

Sea survival training

The exercise is part of a sea survival training during which young officers are made to swim in the sea. The warship is first of the three Talwar class frigates built by Russia and commissioned in 2003.
