A cab driver and his accomplice were pronounced guilty by a court here on Saturday of the rape and murder of Jyotikumari Choudhary, a 22-year-old BPO employee in November 2007.
The incident had brought into focus the issue of security of women working in call centres across the country.
Principal District Judge Anant Badar said that the quantum of punishment for both the accused would be announced on Monday. Driver Purshottam Borate and his friend Pradeep Kokate have been lodged in the Yerwada jail since their arrest on November 3, 2007.
They were charged with cheating, abduction, theft, rape and murder.
On November 1, 2007 Ms. Choudhary, who worked for a Wipro call centre, boarded Borate's cab.
He was joined by Kokate. While the victim was talking on the phone, she did not realise where the driver was headed.
The last that was heard of Ms. Choudhary was when she was asking the driver why he had stopped at an unknown location.
Her body was found near Gahunje village the next day.
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam stated that the case was solved entirely on the basis of circumstantial evidence, as there were no eye-witnesses.
Ms. Choudhary belonged to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
