In an indication that the party will not tolerate any hindrance to its social engineering for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh polls, the Bahujan Samaj Party has expelled a former MP and his brother, an MLC, for anti-party activities and obstructing the growth of Brahmins within the party.

The expelled leaders, former Phulpur MP Kapil Muni Kanwaria and his brother Surajbhan, an MLC, belong to the Brahmin community.

Senior BSP leader R.K. Chaudhary said the two leaders were expelled for indulging in anti-party activities despite at least three warnings. “After the Lok Sabha elections, we received complaints against them on many occasions. They were hindering the growth of the Brahmin samaj (within the party),” Mr. Chaudhary said.

Mr. Kanwariya was the party candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections but he lost his seat to the BJP’s Keshav Prasad Maurya. Party sources indicated that the Kanwariya brothers’ proximity to the BJP after the

Lok Sabha results could have been a reason for their anti-party activities.

The Kanwariya brothers were sentenced to jail by a district court in 2015 in connection with the murder of Samajwadi Party MLA from Jhusi (Allahabad) Jawahar Yadav in 1996.
