BSNL engineers go on indefinite strike

August 18, 2009 02:31 pm | Updated 02:32 pm IST - New Delhi:

About 10,000 engineers of state-run telecom firm BSNL in the country started an indefinite strike from Tuesday, demanding absorption of officers on deputation at the PSU and transparent human resource policy.

However, to ensure that the strike does not disrupt operations, the BSNL has set up a control room for managing the system during the strike. The BSNL management could not be contacted for further details.

The strike is likely to impact the operations of the state-owned telecom firm as most of the engineers who are on strike are heading different circles or zonal offices.

The All India Graduate Telecom Officers Association (AIGETOA), which has over 10,000 engineers as members, has called the strike demanding the absorption of deputed officers from the Department of Telecom in BSNL.

The Indian Telecom Service officers continuing in BSNL without being absorbed is not in line with the instructions of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), which states that the deputation of government servants to any public sector undertaking should be not allowed for more than three years, a representative from the striking association said.
