Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat on Friday assailed the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre saying it was not focussing on the welfare of workers, peasants and others belonging to weaker sections of society.

Addressing a public meeting at Coonoor, Ms. Karat said that the government now “of the corporates, by the corporates and for the corporates”.

The Left parties would not have any truck with “fraudulent” alliances, she said. It would strive for a broad-based alliance that would involve all sections of people. It would be “of the people, by the people and for the people,” and would chase away the 2G and Adarsh scamsters. She urged people to extend their support to such an alternative.

Referring to the recent celebrations to mark the completion of three years by the UPA government, she said that the regime had left the people in the lurch.

Contending that the petrol price hike was only to benefit private petroleum companies, she said that the factors attributed were baseless. Contrary to the claim of the government, international crude prices had come down in the last five months.

Alleging that the government was duping people, Ms. Karat said that last year the Centre earned over Rs.92,000 crore by way of taxes on petroleum products.
