Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale has demanded that apart from the punishment courts award to rapists, there should be stringent action like social boycott of the convict. The “arms and legs [of rapists] should be broken,” he said.

Citing the cases of rape of girls as young as three and seven, the MP from Maharashtra said such acts were a manifestation of extremely depraved minds, and called for severe punishment.

Raising the issue in the House on Friday, Mr. Athawale said “raping young girls brings shame to the country and there is a need to end this torture”.

Referring to the rape and murder of a seven-year-old in Maharashtra recently, he said: “I want to draw the Home Ministry’s attention to this serious issue. Like it used to happen during Shivaji’s time, rapists should have their arms and legs broken ... they can be hanged later, but this problem has to end.”

The issue of violence against women, especially acid attacks, was also raised by JD(U) MP K.C. Tyagi.
