An MLA of Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), which is an ally of the ruling Congress in Assam, was arrested in the wee hours on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the recent violence in the state.
Pradeep Brahma, alias Gara, who represents Kokrajhar (West) constituency, was arrested from his house at Dotoma near Kokrajhar town at about 1 a.m. as seven cases had already been registered against him in several police stations.
BPF is the ruling party of the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) whose chief is Hagrama Mohilary.
Following the arrest and Wednesday’s violence in neighbouring Dhubri district in which two persons were killed, indefinite curfew was clamped in Kokrajhar district.
Army staged flag march even as Brahma’s supporters started picketing on the railway track and national highway 31.
More than 80 persons have lost their lives and four lakh were rendered homeless in the violence in lower Assam districts of Korajhar, Dhubri and Chirang.

The voilence was done by two sides. I see arrest from top rank of one side. What is about the other side?
Everybody is saying about throwing the Bangladeshi migrants out of
India/Assam/Northeast but it's not that simple a task. We have to come to
terms with the reality. It's not only the vote-bank politics which is
keeping these migrants in India. They are employed everywhere. One
can find them working everywhere from serving as household assistants to
working under big contractors in building roads and construction of
multistory structures. All because they come in cheap compared to the
native workers of the Northeast. All these people, especially the
construction companies in Northeast India, have to stop employing the
Bangladeshi migrants first. Then only the process of throwing them
out of India will start. The rest will follow suit.
This will add fire to the fuel. I am feeling very sorry at the state of affairs of our govt.
Well let the law do what it has to based on evidence and not on emotions
and faith...This is a right step, with his arrest and "interrogation" we
will know more. Life of both "migrants" and the "natives" is important.
By arresting this person , gov is trying to cover up the real cause , instead of finding a solution to this illegal migrant issue . Please stop votebank politics and throw out all illegal Bangladeshis out of India before they change the whole demography of the country and make it a banana republic .Native people of the region are under threat of survival . Do something about it before country become polarized by some brainwashed masses .
