In a swift action, a team of the Mumbai Police rescued a five-year-old boy kidnapped by his neighbour here. The child was taken to Bihar by the kidnapper. The 28-year-old accused will be produced before a court here on Sunday.
According to initial investigation, R. Raghuwanshi told the police that as his married sister was infertile, he wanted to give her the custody of the boy.
Police said he did not make any ransom calls to the victim’s father.
Raghuwanshi is a hawker hailing from Chhapra in Bihar. He had come to the city sometime ago seeking employment and used to stay at Vaishali Nagar. On October 16, he kidnapped the son of his neighbour Santosh Yadav. Since the accused and the victim’s father were acquaintances, no one suspected the latter.
The police had a look at the numbers of those to whom Santosh Yadav had talked through his mobile. “After he talked to Raghuwanshi, the latter’s location showed as Igadpuri. We immediately understood that he might have taken the Rajendranagar Express. So, we sent a team there to capture him,” Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region) Krishna Prakash told The Hindu .
The Superintendent of Police of Chhapra moved swiftly and helped the Mumbai Police team, which arrested Raghuwanshi from Sonpur in Chhapra on Thursday and took the child into its custody, he said adding, “He was produced in a court there, which granted his transit remand to us. They will be brought to the city on Sunday.”
