The bodies of five Indian peacekeepers killed in ambush on a U.N. peacekeeping mission in South Sudan reached here on Thursday.
Belonging to 6 Mahar regiment, Lt. Col. Mahipal Singh, Naib Subedar Shiv Kumar Pal, Havaldar Hira Lal, Havaldar Bharat Singh and Sepoy Nand Kishore Joshi were part of over two battalions of the Indian Army personnel posted as peacekeepers in Sudan.
Four other personnel injured in the attack have also been flown in in a U.N.-chartered aircraft.
The body of Lt. Col. Singh was taken to his native place Mahendragarh in Haryana in an ambulance by road.
The mortal remains of Nand Kishore Joshi were flown in to Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. He hailed from Barabe village, 22 km from Pithoragarh.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced a financial assistance of Rs. 20 lakh each to the family members of Havaldar Heeralal and Naib Subedar Shiv Kumar Pal. The two belonged to Bulandshahr and Pratapgarh districts respectively.
