The BJP president Rajnath Singh on Monday blamed Samajwadi Party led Uttar Pradesh government for the prevailing tense situation in the state, triggered by the VHP’s decision to defy the ban on their yatra and the subsequent arrests of several supporters, priests and leaders.

“SP is to blame for the present situation in U.P.,” he told reporters at party headquarters in New Delhi.

Mr. Singh said whenever SP is in power in Uttar Pradesh, the state suffers from poor law and order situation and tensions.

Parliament also witnessed uproar over the VHP yatra with BJP MPs decrying the U.P. government’s decision to arrest hundreds of saints to foil VHP’s 84 kosi parikrama yatra.

SP members stoutly defended their government’s decision and accused BJP of indulging in communal politics ahead of general elections scheduled for early next year.
