Home Ministry to review security issues in 60 days.
Canada-based Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry, on Monday provided certain proposals for lawful access to its services by India's security agencies, sources in the Home Ministry said.
The proposals would be operationalised immediately and the company would set up a server in India, the sources added.
At a high-level meeting chaired by Home Secretary G.K. Pillai, it was decided that the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) would study the feasibility of all such services being provided through the server located only in India.
The Ministry, in a release, said it would review security issues related to BlackBerry in 60 days, by which time the DoT is expected to submit its report.
The Ministry earlier imposed a deadline of August 31 on RIM and made it clear that the company would have to offer a solution to share heavily encrypted data or be ready to face a shutdown of its operations in India.

i agree with vicky's statement. given a blooming industry in india, such rare prospects and opportunities will and make the nation one of the main lands. hence, we can expect a better response from the market. wonderful move by the indian government. looking forward to a much more futuristic india.
India is a Potential market for every handset & cellular service providers.... if Blackberry wouldn't have acted on Govt conditions, they would have faced a big loss in future as India is a business hub for every industry. Hope DOT shows a GO GREEN for this initiative by RIM. All the best RIM
i will term this move of RIM as a strategic win for India as India will be only the country other than Canada for having servers of RIM.
RIM took this decision because of strong emerging smart phone market in India.
Really appreciate the steps taken by the GOvt to ensure data security, and am happy that RIM has no other choice than to accept owing to the demand potential. On the whole, from an indian perspective, unless this thought penetrates to the last level, we are chasing a tunnel with no end........make sure that people awareness is also built upon......jai ho!!!
