Owning moral responsibility for the dismal performance of the Congress in elections to zilla parishads of Odisha, B.K. Hariprasad on Monday resigned from the post of general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee and membership of AICC Working Committee.
Mr. Hariprasad told The Hindu that the Congress had performed very badly in the zilla parishad elections. The BJP had shunted out the Congress from the position of the principal Opposition party. The ruling Biju Janata Dal had emerged as the single largest party winning 473 ZP seats, while the BJP secured 297 seats. The Congress won only 60 seats.
The Congress leaders of Odisha had blamed Mr. Hariprasad, who is in charge of the State, for the party’s performance in the ZP polls.
Asked whether he would quit the Congress, Mr. Hariprasad said: “I am a loyal party worker. Even in my wildest dream, I will not think of quitting the party.”
