The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday echoed President Pranab Mukherjee’s sentiments about the need for a stable government.
On the occasion of Republic Day, BJP president Rajnath Singh said the party welcomed the President’s remarks on the need for a stable government at the Centre and agreed with his view that populist anarchy cannot be a substitute for governance.
Unfurling the national flag at the BJP headquarters, Mr. Singh said: “I welcome the President’s remarks on the issue of anarchist politics.”
He was referring to President Mukherjee’s oblique reference to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s recent two-day protest here and the tussle between the Delhi government and the Centre over the suspension of some police officers.
Mr. Singh said there was an urgent need to find immediate solutions to economic, political and security challenges.
“Dignity in shreds”
Launching the BJP’s nationwide initiative ‘Mere Sapnon Ka Bharat’ on the India272 portal, he also expressed concern over the depleting respect for constitutional bodies, pointing out that the dignity of these institutions had been undermined. “The dignity of the country’s constitutional structures and institutions is in shreds. Their respect has declined considerably.”
‘Poverty a curse’
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley also expressed concern and said poverty continued to be the greatest curse on Indian society.
“Nearly 30 per cent of our population lives below the poverty line. The poor is denied the right to live with dignity. Terrorism and insurgency remain a great threat to India’s sovereignty.”
Mr. Jaitley called for raising the bar of politics and said: “The quality of politics in India needs to improve. The power of politics is immense. The stature of men who man politics must be in consonance with the huge power that politicians wield. The declining quality of politics reflects itself on issues of governance. India today expects governance which will deliver on problems which confront the society.”
