Advocating a proper study and consensus before carving out small states, the BJP on Sunday alleged that the Congress did not take the parties concerned into confidence before deciding on creation of a separate Telangana state.

“A thorough study should be made before creating smaller states in future. Consensus should be taken from all the sections concerned to maintain social harmony,” BJP leader Arun Jaitley said at a news conference here.

“The Congress failed in dealing with the Telangana issue smoothly as it did not even bother to discuss with its own legislators, let alone the Opposition,” he claimed.

Had the Centre taken a leaf out of the erstwhile NDA government’s procedure in carving out three states in 2000, it would not have found itself in a ‘mess’ on the Telangana statehood, Mr. Jaitley said.

“Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand came into existence amidst peaceful and happy atmosphere. But even the Congress legislators are objecting (creation of Telangana) because their consensus was not sought,” he added.

He said the BJP had always backed smaller states like Telengana for speedy development.
