The Ramakrishna Math, Belur, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order on Thursday took over a two-storey house in North Kolkata where Ramakrishna Paramahansa Dev stayed for cancer treatment for 70 days in 1885, months before his death in August 1886.
Handover
Ramakrishna Order president Swami Atmasthanandaji and secretary Swami Prabhanandaji were present along with other senior monks to accept the handover from the Sri Ramakrishna Smaran Sangha, a private body of disciples who had been looking after the property since 1978, trying to preserve a heritage.
‘Shyampukur Bati,' where the saint was brought from the Dakshineswar temple for treatment, housed not only Sri Ramakrishna Dev but also Mother Sarada Devi.
Swami Vivekananda, (then Narendranath Dutta) also stayed in this house, where thespian Girish Chandra Ghosh, a devout follower, worshipped Ramakrishna Paramahansa as Goddess Kali.
The camera, used to take photographs of Sri Ramakrishna, as well as a marble-topped seat he used, is preserved in a museum on the premises.
