The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to grant bail to the former Bharatiya Janata Party president, Bangaru Laxman, in a corruption case filed after a sting operation by news website tehelka.com in 2001.
In an appeal against his conviction by a trial court here on April 28, Mr. Laxman also sought suspension of the four-year sentence.
Counsel submitted that he was 72, had undergone heart bypass surgery twice and was also diabetic. However, Justice Mukta Gupta said she could not pass an order without going through the trial court records.
Later, Justice Gupta issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation, returnable on July 5.
During the sting operation, Mr. Laxman was caught on camera allegedly demanding and accepting Rs.1 lakh as bribe from fictitious defence dealers.
