The Centre on Thursday extended the ban on bulk SMS and MMS till September 29, after the Supreme Court stayed the pronouncement of the verdict on the Babri title suits till next week.

Following consultations with the Union Home Ministry, the Ministry of Communications and IT had on Wednesday announced banning of all bulk SMS and MMS for 72 hours (till Saturday). The Allahabad High Court was to have announced its judgment on the case on Friday.

The Home Ministry has asked all mobile service providers to keep vigil on individuals sending more than 10 SMS on a single day, while the limit for companies is 100.

Law enforcement agencies are also closely monitoring the situation as the government is apprehensive that some anti-social elements may foment trouble by inciting communal passions.
