K.G. Balakrishnan, former Chief Justice of India, is likely to be appointed chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.

Highly-placed sources told TheHindu that Mr. Justice Balakrishnan, who demitted office on Tuesday, gave his consent on Wednesday for being considered for appointment to the post.

The NHRC chairperson's position has been lying vacant for about a year after the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Rajendra Babu from the post.

Sabharwal ruled out

The Centre already made its intentions clear that it was not considering another former CJI, Y. K. Sabharwal.
