Balakrishnan is NHRC chairman

The government on Thursday announced the appointment of the former Chief Justice of India, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, as the sixth chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He will take charge on Monday, it was officially stated here.

Justice Balakrishnan, 65, retired as CJI on May 12.

He was appointed a Supreme Court judge in 2000 and sworn in as CJI on January 14, 2007. The post of NHRC chairperson had been lying vacant for the past one year after the retirement of Justice Rajendra Babu. Since then, Justice G. P. Mathur had been acting as the commission's chairperson.
