The Bombay High Court has granted bail to Akbar Raunak Ali Khan, accused in the August 11 Azad Maidan riots case. He had sustained a bullet injury in the incident.
Akbar is the fourth suspect to get bail. Other suspects who got bail are Amin Chaudhary, Umair Ansari and Nazar Siddiqui.
Justice Abhay Thipsay said, “From the point of view of investigation, the detention of the applicant does not seem to be essential.”
When the prosecution contended that Akbar was “present at the spot for helping the victims of the riots,” the court said “such a contention cannot be appreciated at this stage.”
“The applicant’s presence is evident. In fact, his photograph has been published in a newspaper,” Justice Thipsay said.
The court also considered the fact that Akbar was hospitalised for a month due to the injury. It granted him bail on a cash bond of Rs. 30,000 with a surety.
The Mumbai crime branch police have so far arrested 63 people in connection with the riots.
