‘Gurjant Singh charged twice for the same incident, which is illegal'

A Tamluk court in Purbo Medinipur district on Monday denied bail to lorry driver Gurjant Singh, accused of attempting to murder Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, on grounds that the State's Criminal Investigation Department had not produced all the relevant documents in court.

A lorry driven by Singh had rammed into one the escort vehicles of Ms. Banerjee's convoy as she was returning from her August 9 rally at Lalgarh. “He was remanded to judicial custody till August 25, since the CID did not produce the relevant documents that include the case diary, the injury reports of Mamata Banerjee and the forensic reports,” Ashok Dinda, Mr. Singh's counsel told TheHindu over telephone.
