Rejecting any suggestion of bringing medical education under the purview of the proposed National Commission for Higher education and Research (NCHER), an overarching regulatory body, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said there needs to be some logic for the same.
Talking to reporters here, Mr. Azad said medical education was a vast subject and clubbing it with the rest of higher education could make the entire system collapse under its own weight.
“Medical education is an integral part of the Health Ministry and a separate subject along with hospital management,” he said.
“Totally new concept”
Pointing out that an overarching body was a “totally new concept” for the Human Resource Development Ministry, Mr. Azad said the Health and Family Welfare Ministry has been running at least five such bodies for several decades.
The Ayush Council, the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council, the Pharmacy Council and the Nursing Council are all regulatory bodies under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
