In a surprise development, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday met DMK president M. Karunanidhi at his residence here.

Emerging from the 30-minute meeting, Mr Azad told reporters that he did not discuss alliance issue with the DMK leader.

“We have been together for decades. We never fight with each other,” he responded, when pointed out that the DMK, at its general council last month, decided against having truck with the Congress for the Lok Sabha poll. Mr. Azad said coordination and mutual respect always marked the ties between the two parties.

Pointing out that he did not visit Chennai for six or seven months, the Congress leader said he always made it a practice to meet the DMK leader when he was in the city.

DMK MP Kanimozhi was present during the meeting.
