BJP wary of criticising Vadra
On a day when the business dealings of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra were front-paged in most newspapers, the Congress’ official briefing focused on economic reforms, the fact that the rupee had appreciated against the dollar, and that the government was confident that it would be able to pass the insurance and pension Bills in the coming session of Parliament.
But, curiously, the principal Opposition party, the BJP, too, put the spotlight on the same issue at its press conference on Monday, even taking credit for the role the NDA government had played in pushing economic reforms and criticising the UPA government for its inability to take the process forward effectively.
Both the parties spoke about the Vadra issue only when questions were raised by journalists.
The Congress’ initial response on Friday was to distance itself from the accusations, citing the fact that Mr. Vadra is not a Congress member, and stressing that if there had been any wrongdoing then his accusers could go to court. But that very evening, a host of ministers and party spokespersons jumped into the fray to defend him vigorously. On Monday, the Congress explained its defence: “The attack is part of a well-planned conspiracy not against an individual but against the Congress and its leadership,” party spokesperson Rashid Alvi said in answer to a question.
Chidambaram rules out probe
Simultaneously, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram ruled out any investigation into Mr. Vadra’s business dealings: unless there was a specific allegation of quid pro quo or corruption, he said, “private transactions cannot and ought not to be allowed to be questioned on the basis of ... insinuations.” He was answering a question at the economic editors’ conference here.
Two of Congress’ allies also came to its rescue. Union Agriculture Minister and NCP boss Sharad Pawar dared India Against Corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal to go to court if he could substantiate his allegations; Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad accused the latter of targeting Mr. Vadra “to get cheap publicity.”
Three days after the IAC accused Ms. Gandhi’s son-in-law of receiving interest-free loans and discounted apartments in luxury projects built by real estate giant DLF, the BJP seemed unwilling to capitalise on the Vadra saga. On Saturday, its president Nitin Gadkari had told CNN-IBN in an interview: “I have no paperwork. I kept hearing about it but I had no evidence. I can’t accuse anyone of anything without evidence, can I?” Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, too, refrained from comment on her Twitter account.
Indeed, when Mr. Vadra’s business deals first surfaced in March 2011 in The Economic Times, the BJP’s core group was divided on pursuing the issue on the basis of the report. Ms. Swaraj and Rajnath Singh felt that targeting family members of political rivals was not good politics, and sought “more evidence” before taking it further. On March 16, 2011, Ms. Swaraj told journalists that as the matter was serious, senior leader Arun Jaitley had been entrusted with the task of collecting more information so that the matter could be raised “with the prominence it deserves.” Two attempts subsequently to raise the issue in Parliament were rejected by the chairs of the two Houses; however, the party still chose not to go public on the issue.
The ambivalence in the BJP continues: on Monday, the party found itself in a spot when one of its leaders obliquely hit out at a colleague, while ostensibly targeting Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Shanta Kumar, wrote to Mr. Kejriwal asking him to seek details of the transaction through which Ms. Vadra acquired prime property in the hill state even though the sale of land is forbidden to outsiders. Mr. Kejriwal’s response was that since Mr. Kumar’s party is in power in the State, securing the details should be the BJP’s task.
The accusation refers to the land Ms. Vadra bought in 2007, reportedly, after the Congress government of the day changed the law to allow her to make the purchase. Curiously, the land was given in two instalments — the second when the BJP’s Prem Kumar Dhumal was Chief Minister. Mr. Kumar’s effort to hurt his party colleague, Mr. Dhumal, on the eve of State elections has embarrassed the BJP.

Late prime minister Indhra Gandhi brought in urban land cieling in the Sixtees. Currently people with unaccounted black money buy urban land and RE properties with no limit throughout India. It is high time to bring back urban ceiling now and let the common people own their homes at a fair price and reasonable interest rate.
by this logic now , everyone in congress from top downwards to all darbaris will say it was our personal transaction between two individuals and can not be probed . what bizzarre logic
Capitalism gives direct right to have Limitless Money and Limitless Property . It has to be earned by Exploitation of the General Masses ( common man & working class).... Its a rule of industrialists over the working class... and we are ought to b exploited as long as Capitalism ( open market) exists. Corruption is just a part of it.
Why no investigation ?. DLF is not a private entity. It is a publicly
listed company. What about its directors?.What about DLF's corporate
governance?.DLF is givings its share holders asset to Vadra for free
Congress is not able to give any explanation on this deal .That means
there is some big fraud and illegality in this.Instead of explaining
congress and sonia are trying to run away from issue
Vijay Nagar Kingdom fell because Son-In-Law come to power. Here we should wait and watch ?
L'affair Vadra has made one thing clear. Politics in India is quid pro
quo all the way. The reason for huge corrupt deals do not see the
logical end of justice is because every political party is corrupt
and have been indulging in hypocritical double speak to mislead
hapless long suffering mass of this country. Equally clear is the
reason for the political class not wanting really effective ombudsman.
No political outfit is beyond looting the public and only an idiotic
politicians will want an independent anti corruption body. Churchill,
no doubt an imperialist, but was impeccably prophetic observing on
India gaining independence that "Power will go to the hands of
rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low
calibre & men of straw. They will have sweet tongues & silly hearts.
They will fight amongst themselves for power & India will be lost in
political squabbles. A day would come when even air & water would be
taxed in India."
How ironic it was that though Mr. Vadra's name is present on all airports for relaxation against frisking (for a well known reason that he Gandhi son-in-law ) but when the attack was launched against him, Congress could not refrain from saying he was a "private individual" and now they have all come to his rescue. This shall only increase the trouble for JIJA. How helpless we are when we say that it is obvious that near ones of politicians in power will get undue mileage. The attitude certainly needs to be changed.
No one can make this much money in 3 years, unless he is having oil well
at home, it is said that Vadra is not even checked at airport as he
belongs to Z category. Should investigate and if proved, punish with no
sympathy.
It’s this sympathetic and too much god fearing factor of Indian people
has made our country a weak state.
Attack on Congress is attack on corruption.
Being born in a political family makes you a politician yourself, that
is a great truism of Indian Politics. It is obvious that people will
approach such a person for favors whether he or she obliges such
approach is another matter.
Being married into a political family is also not to far off Mrs Sonia
Gandhi's first credibility as a politician was that she was married in
to the most powerful political family in India. Can some wrongdoing be
conclusively proved? I do not know but the suspicion that sweetheart
deal from DLF to Mr Vadra is on the only grounds that he is related to
Mrs Sonia Gandhi and was likely to enter politics himself just like
her, is not just a suspicion it is a truism.
Congress did every possible effort to mudslide against Baba ramdev and
others for having in-proportionate assets as CBI, income tax dept all
were after them. Those who were big mouthpiece for congress then now
have taken u-turn for example Digvijay singh . where are these
congressmen now. Congress has already lost its credibility to rule
however Vadra definitely should be Probed by IT Dept at the earliest
before he manipulates documents.
As far the accumulation of property is concerned, the government has right to probe into it. Any refrain from the investigation only shows government's own involvement into it. The government seems to be shaking by relentless charges of corruption and money laundering. It will be better for the government to order a probe into it so that it can atleast keep itself aside of the matter, no matter what verdict the jury announces.
DLF is a public limited company and its financial practices are open to scrutiny by its board
of directors, share-holders and auditors. Why does Kejriwal need time till Tuesday evening to
produce further documentary proof? Can't escape the feeling that Kejriwal and company are
out to seek publicity.
The headline just reminds the shamelessness of sycophants led by Dev
Kant Barooah declaring ‘Indira is India,India is Indira’ in the 1970s.
There is no cure for sycophancy in the GOP of India as long as dynastic
rule perpetuates.
Another thrilling scandal, now from the self appointed "Royal' family ! We have yet to forget BOFORS ! India never disappoints !!!
Who care about BJP ,we just got the real opposition party IAC. BJP
is "Nakaly" opposition party. And I'm not surprised by BJP's politics.
They are equally corrupt like Congress.
DLF as a commercial house did what is in the best interest of its stakeholders. While the politicians did what is in the best interest of their family members. It only differs in degree, not in kind.
Then why not start a CBI Enquiry against the allegations / "attack on Congress" ??
I would have been suprised if it was said any other way. This Government/Congress Party is for the Gandhi's, by the Gandhi's, & of the Gandhi's. My question is how was it different in Indira's time? Ditto. No difference. How was it different in Nehru's time? Ditto. No difference. Except that Nehru did have some broadness to his exposure; largely due to his support for Mohandas Gandhi, & the freedom struggle at large, against others. So he had to toil, which made all the difference. But what are we comparing Nehru's stature against! India is a Civilization, with millions of Indians, in India, & globally who hail from families who have had education & merit in service/business over 8-10 generations. Their quality is impeccable, & service to the global/Indian community is exemplary. So in the larger context it is time we Indians start looking at this class of people, who have genuine interest in promoting India, & Indians, across lines, as their service as always been dedicated to such.
The whole scenario is ridiculous. The country must hold the Congress (and the BJP) to account for any suggestions of graft. It is inconceivable that Robert Vadra is as pure as the driven snow. Of course he has made a killing all the while based on his relationship to the Congress - it would be naive to believe anything otherwise. Books have been balanced to create a smoke screen.
In the US, even a mere suggestion of wrongdoing is investigated - e.g., The raj rajratnam and rajat Gupta cases. The case must be framed and the courts must decide innocence and guilt. But, for the case to be framed, the public prosecutor''s office must be more independent than it is in India. Can the Hindu Centre for public policy take this as one of their agenda items? Strengthening public prosecution...to tackle graft and to create a strong system of 'answerability' in the country.
Thank you for reporting. Is this report made available in local languages as it is necessary to spread the message. It is a case of India's common people vs politicians and people need to be made aware of what is happening. I am aghast at suberverting law to aid one individual
Vadra is chor and corrupt, and so is party. When it suits the party he becomes an independent individual, and when it doesn't he becomes a congress person. Anyway everyone in faridabad knew and claimed, that since last about 7 years that BPTP land developers is owned by Mr.Vadra in benami names. When congress can have probes in ramdev assets without any reason, now all public knows about corruption by first family, party is running away from an independent probe.
When the spokesperson of Congress both Manish Tiwari and Jayanthi Natarajan claiming that a business connection of Vadra with DLF is an individual affair and was confirmed by Chidambaram that private transaction cannot be questioned by the Income tax department and how can Congress consider attack on Vadra as attack on Party. If there is any misdeeds done by either Vadra or DLF they have to come clear the doubts in the minds of the people by disclosing the right information to the income tax authorities and to the people. Instead all the Congress Netas coming to the rescue of Vadra clearly portrays something wrong has happened and they wanted to safeguard Vadra. Can a layman get a loan from any corporates without atleast minimum of 1000 Rupees without any security? How come Vadra was given an unsecured loan of 65 crores from DLF which was further used to purchase flats from DLF itself - this raises some serious questions. Vadra and DLF has to clarify.... will it happen? No & never!!
Her driving out Tatas from WB is wrong, but her opposing FDI in retail is 100% correct, I
think. What we need now is FDI in manufacturing, in power generation, especially in non-
conventional energy like Solar or Wind Energy, in computer hardware etc. Someone has
rightly said that we need to manufacture computer chips not potato chips with investment
from foreign countries.
No doubt the BJP which is alays fiesty about any such allegations
against the congress is unable to proceed the allegations against Vadra
as it is also involved.let's wait for tomorrow when Kejriwal will come
out with the allegations against another political big wig likely to be
BJP
It is public knowledge that Vadra, being the first son-in-law of the nation, has benefited wrongly. But the unfortunate thing is, the principal opposition, the BJP, is not lily-white. Its leading lights like Sushma Swaraj were too close to looters like Gali Janardhan Reddy. If the Congress is 100% rotten, the other parties are only slightly less rotten.
Genius!! I mean, isn't that obvious? Being the Congress' son-in-law is
the only reason Vadra became so rich, so soon.
Sonia is India and Congress as per Congressmen. What else we can expect
from a party, full of selfish sycophants. It is a pity that the great
Indian National Congress stooped to such level. It is sad that the major
Political party of our country is in this state. Do we deserve only such
people?
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NOBLE INNER VOICE-
Surely such moneys if one goes by INDIAN tradition is doled out to
Son in Laws and surely MR ROBERT VADRA is no Son in Law of DLF !
'Targeting family members of politicians is not good...'. Now doesn't that make you think? Politician's kins should also refrain from identifying with the leaders. In a country where even a police constable's relative tries to make money 'under the table' using his connections, this logic of keeping politician's kin away from scrutiny does not work.
there can be no other explanation..BJP and congress are hand in glove
when it comes to corruption.... Hindu please make an effort to bring out
more on the Vadra Guy... We Indians wants truth nothing less... most of
news are just left as congress mouth pieces.. don't you join the club..
Yes yes Gandhi's is Congress & Congress is Gandhi parivar just like India is Indira & Indira is India...... Come 2014 people will teach you a lesson.
Corruption by Vadra is corruption by Congress!!
Attack on a family member of the party president is considered an attack on the party
itself! This is our national party!! What an unprofessional and shameless thing to say.
They send out a Tsunami of ministers to protect a man who has very questionable
credentials. This clearly speaks for itself. If this is how they support him he could have
exploited these sycophants for his business.
You wonder about the business model which can convert Rs 50 lakhs into
Rs 300 Crores in 3 years. Some alchemy trick? No services rendered, No
goods supplied but still Vadra gets Rs 300 CR property free! Come on ,
The people of this country are not fools. Well, this is the business
model of Indian politicians.
If an attack on Vadra is an attack on Congress, then the act of Vadra is an act of Congress too. Yes, it is hundred percent true. Mr. Vadra is a weak person on his own. Only UPA power has made him not only powerful but also careless and ruthless. Nobody in power, in the Government or in the opposition will even try to stop this. Only public can decide, what to do.
It is so funny to see congress folks falling over each other to please
their boss!! Shows how much of degeneration has set in!
It is common in most democracies around the world that people in power face more scrutiny and India should be no different. At some point when turning Rs 30L to Rs 300Cr the connection to Nehru family would have mattered and would have been used. Common people of India have to be assured and feel confident that Robert Vadra has taken a straight path shunning political influence to win business and make money. So the public is right in demanding that business dealings of people connected to the Nehru family be made public, as otherwise where can they get the confidence that everyone is subject to the same treatment as the rest of us?
Why should Congress stonewall any attempts to get Vadra speak the truth? Does it hurt? Congress should see this as a method of redeeming itself by proving that Robert Vadra acquired all his wealth by means that will stand up to scrutiny in public glare especially when all their leaders are up to their neck in allegations of corruption.
What a mockery of democracy!
Birds of the same feather flock together, don't they?
If any party believes in nepotism, cronyism and dynastic inheritance, that 'party' should be over! A mature democracy cannot tolerate the remnants of feudalistic and autocratic persuasions. Unchecked, the fairness in the society, the level playing field and equal opportunity for all citizens will be lost! The few rich will become richer and richer while the wast poor will be getting poorer and poorer! A true democracy cannot allow that!
Remember "India is Indira and Indira is India"? We are slowly moving
towards a similar situation. Hope someone will realize soon the folly of
comparing Vadra's business deals as that of Congress party affair.
Sooner it is, better for the party and the country.
That's the most harebrained thing I've ever heard! Someone please tell
Rajnath Singh that it is in fact good politics to "target" family
persons accused of corruption. That's nepotism outright. How can
attacking nepotism be bad politics.
one more scandal!! Is there any end?
Why the opposition (BJP, Lalu Prasad, etc) are keeping quite?
May be there is an understanding between the "THIEVES?" I wonder whom to trust any politician any more?????
It is clearly visible from the above story that the party in power is blackmailing the BJP to refrain from this matter as then the corrupt in the BJP and allies would also not be spared but retaliated with power against Gadkari etc. but what the ruling party lacks to know is that they can't target the righteous people like Hazare and Kejriwal. All I'll say that all these old and obsolete parties are doomed now and we see a ray of hope with Satyagraha coming in
In the case of Jagan Reddy, son of late YSR Reddy, late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh also, the suspicious transactions were between private individuals and Jagan Reddy. The later claimed that it was his enterpeneural sklls which prompted private individuals and companies to invest in his companies.Still CBI and ED swung into action and are probing his deals.Jagan Reddy is still in jail. Why cannot the same treatment be given to Vadra and a probe be undertaken?.Why this differential treatment though the facts of the matters are similar?
The entire truth will only come out when a Supreme Court appointed independent investigating agency probes the case. Is there such an agency in our country. Even when there is a primary culpulability on your part in 2G scam, there is no investigation. Can you tell us how this issue is different from what Mr Jagan's phenomenal rise in personal wealth. While Mr Jagan is behind the bars as CBI feels he can affect the investigations, Vadra is enjoying Z category security. How different.
Shalini Singh of the HIndu stable is the PAG (Public Auditor General) now. Hurrah to
her. Let Mr. Chidambaram refute the Hindu article, sentence by sentence in the
interest of convincing India of the integrity of Mr.Vadra & the company, he keeps.
