Security forces have so far apprehended nine cadres of militant National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) in connection with the December 23 terror attacks on Adivasi villages by the outfit in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of Assam, even as Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA) Sharad Kumar arrived here on twoday visit to the state to review the progress of investigation of the probe by the agency into the terror attacks.
The NIA chief is scheduled to visit the violencehit areas on Wednesday. State Home Department stated that the number of inmates in relief camps in Sonitpur and three districts of Bodoland Territorial Area District—Kokrajhar, Chirang and Udalguri—have come down following improved security arrangements in vulnerable areas. The terror attacks by militants of NDFB (Songbijit) on Adivasi villages and subsequent retaliatory attacks on Bodo villages by miscreants among the Adivasis and police firing on protestors claimed 81 lives (Adivasi66, Bodo13, others2) and displaced over 2.70 lakh people belonging to both the Bodos and the Adivasis.
Assam State Disaster Management Authorities stated that as on Tuesday 1,29,828 inmates were taking shelter in 77 relief camps in the four affected districts. In Kokrajhar 1,08,278 inmates are staying in 59 relief camps, in Chirang 19,836 inmates are in 11 camps, in Udalguri 1,358 inmates are staying in 6 camps while in Sonitpur district 356 inmates are staying in one relief camp.
