A group of officers of the Assam police is going to the United States to receive training in operating the Global Information System (GIS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS), installation of which is under way at the city police control room. The first trial of the GIS/GPS will be conducted by mid-December. A trial run on a miniature scale has already been conducted successfully, says a release here on Saturday.
Acting on the recommendations of the Enquiry Committee headed by the former Director-General of Police, D.N. Dutt, CCTVs and mobile cameras will be installed in 91 locations as part of the Video Surveillance project for Guwahati, for which the Government of India has sanctioned Rs.10.38 crore. The key locations are traffic intersections, markets, malls, cinema halls, hotels and designated parking lots.
A contingency traffic plan — as per the recommendations of the committee — is being prepared and a panel headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), has been formed to finalise plans for installation of traffic signals.
The State government proposes to upgrade the civil defence and fire service training centre. The Government of India has already released Rs. 40 lakh for procuring equipment for strengthening the civil defence set-up in multihazard-prone districts.
Security plan
On the basis of the recommendations of the Dutt committee, constituted in the wake of the October 30, 2008 serial blasts in Guwahati, the State government has constituted a Special Task Group for preparation of a comprehensive security plan for the city to revamp security measures and thwart subversive activities of terrorists.
One platoon of the armed police battalion has been stationed to act as quick response team in the event of any untoward incident.
800 new police posts
To increase police strength, the government has created 800 new posts. Four new police stations and two outposts have also been set up. A sum of Rs. 5.01 crore has been sanctioned for buying 10 anti-riot vehicles, 18 police patrol vehicles, four water cannon, five cranes, six motor boats and 20 wireless sets.
