For the second time in a fortnight, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday appealed for peace and harmony, even as he affirmed that his government remained “fully committed to upholding the rule of law and maintaining peace, order and harmony.”

Shortly after the Ayodhya verdict, Dr. Singh, in his appeal, underlined the fact that “the operative part” of the judgment “moulded the reliefs to the parties in a particular manner.”

He said: “The correct conclusion, at this stage, is that the status quo will be maintained until the cases are taken up by the Supreme Court.”
