Chameli Das wanted in six cases: Police
A court here on Sunday gave a three-day transit remand to Chameli Das, the arrested Maoist leader from Bihar.
Das was arrested on Saturday afternoon from her husband's home in the northern part of the city by a joint team of the city police and the Bihar police.
‘Tip-off’
“We had received a tip-off that Chameli Devi was here, so we inquired with the Bihar police whether any cases were registered against her. They confirmed that she was wanted in several cases, so a team from the Bihar police came here and we made the arrest,” said Rajeev Kumar, the Joint Commissioner of City Police (the Special Task Force).
Police sources said that Das was wanted in six cases and had commanded the attack on the office of a Sub Divisional Police Officer in Munger district in Bihar.
Meanwhile, Maoists and the Maoist-backed Police, Santrash Birodhi Janasadharaner Committee (PSBJC), have called for a bandh in three districts — Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bankura — protesting the death of PSBJC leader Umakanto Mahato in a police encounter on August 27.
Mahato was one of the main accused in the May 28 Jnaneswari Express derailment case, that claimed 150 lives.
