The West Bengal government has allocated Rs. 400 crore for 2010-11 for construction of new dwelling units and renovation of the existing ones for all homeless slum-dwellers and those who were not beneficiaries of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
Of this amount, about Rs. 50 crore has already been granted.
Through this project, municipalities will arrange for construction of low-cost, safe dwelling units.
So far proposals from 105 municipalities have been received.
In all, 2,684 houses will be renovated and 1,177 houses newly constructed with the allocation of Rs. 50 crore.
The project value of all the proposals taken together is Rs. 25 crore. About half of this amount has been released.
