The Shivaji Park police have served a notice to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“We served him the notice yesterday [Friday] as part of preventive action [in connection with the multiplex issue],” Assistant Commissioner of Police Madhukar Sankhe told The Hindu over phone.
However, there is nothing to prevent. The acts of vandalism, allegedly carried out by MNS workers at multiplexes not screening Marathi movies, are a week old.
Last Saturday, the MNS workers allegedly damaged property and tore posters at three cinemas in Mumbai. This was followed by a meeting of Marathi film producers with the MNS chief.
In the aftermath of the incident, the State assured strict action against vandals.
Subsequently MNS supporters were arrested, including party MLA Pravin Darekar.

Comments:
Marathi being the local language should be encouraged in every possible way, but this act from the govt or from other political parties is not going to help that one bit. More than anything else the owners of the movie theatres and multiplexes are running a business out there and would not want to screen something which does not attract enough audience. The govt instead of taking strict action against people vandalising properties in the name of marathi jagruthi, is supporting their baseless ideals and playing vote bank politics.
Now coming to the actual issue, I believe there are people who are more than willing to watch marathi movies, if they happen to be good. So the solution is to improve the quality of the movies being produced and not by discouraging the screening of other language movies.
There are a couple of marathi movies which got screened in multiplexes in recent past on prime times and made great business. With the FTII based in Pune and Bollywood in Mumbai, the film makers can make use of the talent and resources available and come up with good movies which is not the case here.
