A screengrab from the USGS website shows the epicentre of the Nicobar Island earthquake, which hit in the early hours of Sunday. The tremor was also felt in many parts of Chennai.

Tremors also felt in southern and eastern India

A string of earthquakes jolted the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over a 12-hour period on Sunday. The tremors were also felt in southern and eastern India.

There was some panic but no casualties or property damage anywhere, officials said. By evening, life returned to normal in the islands.

The first quake of 7.7 magnitude took place 56 seconds past midnight on Saturday night, followed by a second one of 5.3 magnitude at 4.14 a.m. on Sunday. Two more quakes of 5.1 magnitude were reported at 11 a.m. and 11.56 a.m.

Tremors were also felt in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, officials said.

“We did feel the quake. But life is normal here now. No property damage has been reported in Port Blair,” S. Jaikumaran Nair, chairman of the Port Blair Municipal Council, told IANS over telephone from the Andamans.

The Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services told IANS that a ‘tsunami watch' notice issued after the Sunday quake was withdrawn 90 minutes later.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a Regional Watch notice covering India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. It later scaled it down to India alone.

The Central Seismological Observatory Centre, Shillong, said the quake took place at 12.57 a.m. on the west coast of the Nicobar Island. The epicentre was located at latitude 7.9 degree north and longitude 91.9 degree east.

Several parts of coastal Orissa also experienced mild tremors, officials said in Bhubaneswar.

Correction

The third paragraph of an IANS/PTI report “String of quakes jolts Andaman & Nicobar” (June 14, 2010, page 1) said that the first quake of 7.7 magnitude took place 56 seconds past midnight on Saturday night. It should have been 56 minutes (12:56:50 a.m.).

I just sent this post to a bunch of my friends as I agree with most of what you’re saying here and the way you’ve presented it is awesome.

The map accompanying this article is frustratingly useless in providing land mass reference points. You'd need a captain's chart to understand fully the location.

I'm a resident in Calicut city, Kerala. It would be tough to believe that i personally experienced this quake from here. But very true that i did. Around 1 am today morning, i was lying on my bed after my studies, when i felt myself shaking, though it was a very very mild shake. I jumped out, felt nothing while standing, and again laid down. I felt the same again. I alerted my friends who were studying. They mocked and didn't bother. I told them we'll see 2moro in the newspapers, and now i'm really surprised to hear about the nicobar earthquake.

We felt the tremors similar to the shakes as though we were 'traveling in a train' around 1.AM in T.Nagar, which lasted for about 10 secs. But why wont our Govt flash updates/warn about the same?

Quakes and 'Tsunami' warnings must be extended to >=1250 Km from epicenter. That will cover most populated places along the east coast particularly when these things happen clser to India/Myanmar(Burma) border of 'India region'.

Today 14, June at 1:02AM, earthquake experience

I am staying in the first floor of the apartment in Vadapalani, I was in front of my computer reading emails with my hands on the mouse. Suddenly, I felt a kind of pull/shake/jerk. I thought my hands are strained. I removed my hand still the experience I thought i am feeling giddiness because of the nights food poisoning. I bowed my head down touching my knee. Then i experienced everything was floating without any noice - my chair, monitor, window were tilting or /swinging/ floating. I immediately realized it was an earthquake. I just felt like running out of the house. But within few seconds the earthquake subsided. And I felt it was all over and probably out of danger. At 1:20AM I called up the Police No. 100 and reported the same. The tremor could be 15 seconds- 20 seconds.
I googled for the earthquake in chennai and the Hindu online news has confirmed the tremor in Nicobar and Chennai.
