At least 60 undocumented migrant labourers were pushed back by state police while trying to enter Manipur through Jiribam border check post at Manipur -Assam border, about 222 km west of here, official sources said on Sunday.
Police personnel led by officer in charge of Jiribam police station Y.Muhindro and foreigner police post officer in charge Tajudin Khan, halted several labourers at Jiribam check post yesterday and verified each and every document, the sources said.
Sixty labourers who could not speak Manipuri or any tribal dialect and appeared to be Bangladeshi nationals with no valid documents were found at the other side of the check post in Assam, the sources said adding that they were not allowed to enter Manipur.
Official sources said the state government had already informed about the detection of 43 illegal migrant labourers from Bangladesh and Myanmar on August 30 last during combing operations in Imphal east and Thoubal districts of Manipur.
While 24 migrants Bangladeshis were detected at Golapati Hatta area in Imphal east district during the search operation, 19 Myanmarese nationals were found during search operations at Lilong area in Thoubal district, sources said.
Earlier, official sources had said the 19 Myanmarese migrant labourers were also from Bangladesh but they now clarified that they were from Arakan areas of Myanmar bordering with Bangladesh.
Official sources said the 24 Bangladeshi nationals were mostly from Latsahi, Nabganj, Chappai Nabganj and Rajek districts in that country.
Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Y.Joy Kumar said the entry of illegal migrants in the state was a ‘very serious matter’ and all out efforts would be made to identify and deport them to their respective countries.
Manipur Home minister Gaikhangam had earlier said that steps had been taken to intensify checking of undocumented migrants at three major border points——Jiribam (Assam-Manipur border), Mao (Manipur-Nagaland border) and Moreh (Manipur-Myanmar border).
Gaikhangam said state police forces had been instructed to remain strict vigil at the border points and also intensify checking of undocumented migrants at all the districts in the state adding that this process would continue in the state for sometime.
Meanwhile, Manipur government has initiated process to deport the detected undocumented foreign migrant labourers in the state to their respective countries, official sources said adding that the Union Home ministry has been urged to take necessary steps in this regard.
While the 24 Bangladeshi migrant labourers were in jail, the Myanmarese migrant labourers were still in police custody, sources said added.

The standard of journalism has come down in india. Whatever BJP says is
wrong. That is the stand taken by all print/TV media. Even THE HINDU was
not an exception. Now 60 migrants without valid documents were traced in
two days, it is high time THE HINDU sends Mr. P.Sainath to the ground
Zero, who apparently has a clean record and cover the illegal migrant
statistics. This will help the country to know the truth.
These are undocumented labours, undocumented means they are not indian citizens and so they can't vote here.
@ Amit and @ Vinay how can it be a vote bank politics?
these people are arrested by state police, what is central force or
military is doing in border? answer is simple military cannot act
without the permission of central government and central government want
these people to come for obvious reasons..
a guy without shirt in white vest is talking by a mobile,to whom is he
talking? how did he get sim card? obviously he is talking to undocumented migrant who is staying in india, there is a large network behind this
organised move.
Congress is solely to blame for the undocumented migrant mess in NE Indian states. Over the years short-sighted and greedy politicians condoned the undocumented migration from neighboring countries for vote bank politics. It is no wonder that today native population of NE India are at the risk of becoming minorities in their own land and losing their culture and in the process Indian population is swelling up further.
You are right anil.. we do not expect all this from The Hindu, as it is the most respected and responsible (till now, hope it will show same responsibility in future) daily in India. I am afraid that Hindu is putting its tradition and virtues at stake and that is why people are loosing their faith in The Hindu...
This shows that the immigration officers are the checkposts were allowing undocumented migrants for some graft or other. Only now they seem to be stopping them. Why is it in the news now ? Stopping migrants is their routine job. Stopping them now is in the news. The very fact it is in the news shows that it is something new.
India, as a Sovereign State, Is within her right to push back undocumented
migrants. Is anyone without a valid visa be allowed inside any country
to land on its soil ? If that be the case, India should not be faulted
if it deports undocumented migrants
vote bank politics , these are vote bank of congress party. so, they are
always welcome in this country.
@Anil. For that matter can you justify me the reason for India's leniency towards millions of Sri Lankan Tamils entering Tamil Nadu for many years now? The same goes to gurkhas from adjacent Nepal. Can this be taken as being they are from other faith? Sri Lankan Tamils, as a matter of gratitude killed our late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and still pose a security risk to political leaders like Jayalalitha and Subramaniam Swamy. Are you intently oblivious to these facts?
Hindu newspaper, as far I have seen has been forthright and neutral when reporting such incident. In fact news media like Hindu is only one of its kind left in India now.
And this is the number of undocumented migrants caught in the last two or
three days. Just imagine how many of them have already entered in the
last 65 years. No doubt "Native north-easterners" are angry on Indian
Government.
yes anil is right. The Hindu is sympathetic towards undocumented migrants .
OMG..see the number of illegal migrants ..But from the beginning The Hindu is showing sympathy towards them and don't consider them as a reason for Assam violence . As a responsible citizen May I ask this question to the editor of the newspaper ?
Political parties should stop vote bank politics based on illegal
immigrants, in future this can turn out to be a serious national
security issue. I hope some political parties are also not controlled by
vested interests.
This is what is expected from the state machinery to avoid future
troubles from illegal immigration into our country. Hope Assam will also
follow the same. Central government should support in all means to the
states facing illegal immigration from neighboring countries.
These migrant labours working in all over India. Most of them going to southern part of India, especially Kerala. In Kerala there is no screening for this labours about from where they are coming. They are into crimes and malpractice business.
