Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party for adopting “diversionary tactics” and advised it to wait till the next elections to test its fortunes.
Ruling out his resignation in the coal blocks allocation controversy, he asked the BJP to respect the people’s verdict and let the government function.
“If the BJP feels that the majority cannot be trusted to govern the affairs of this country and they would like to run it their way, that is a total negation of what the democratic politics is about…. Our country faces enormous problems and has done well despite all these odds, but we cannot assume that we can continue to make a mess of the processes of governance and yet the country will continue to grow, that we will continue to create jobs for the young people,” Dr. Singh told the accompanying journalists on his way back after attending the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Tehran.
Dr. Singh said lack of domestic political cohesiveness would prevent the government from laying the foundation for 9 per cent growth.
“I would very much have liked that the Opposition would give us a chance to work in a manner that the basic problems of India such as poverty, hunger and disease can be tackled effectively. Unfortunately, from one crisis to the other, the BJP has chosen to disrupt Parliament. These are all diversionary tactics. One has 24 hours at one’s disposal. If one is preoccupied all the time with handling these diversionary tactics … it affects the ability and capacity of the government to attend to its more fundamental tasks,” he said.
Asked about the issues that were giving him sleepless nights, Dr. Singh placed the developments in Parliament on top of the list. The growing communal tension, the situation in Assam, people from the northeast fleeing some southern cities and sluggish economic growth were the other issues of concern for him.
He also mentioned the “menace of naxalism” which, if not checked, would hurt both national cohesion and economic development.

the congress wants debate , what for ? debates on 2g, cwg, adarsh ,black money, price rise, lok pal etc . have they yeilded any result. have the debates been above party-line and votes also and ever be ? these political parties have reduced the debates to meaningless exercise.there has to be some procedural changes where each member will put his/her views free of whips. will the p.m. speak on this ?
Good point except when BJP was in power and Congress was in the opposition, they set a terrible example. Congress cannot have their cake and eat it too. Almost all problems in the country are due to corrupt and immoral behavior by the Congress party over the years. They set a terrible example that the other parties are following.
Every time congress is breaking its own records of scams. It seems
manmohan is adapoting diversionary tactics not the BJP. Without giving
satisfactory answer to the public on coal gate respected PM raising
about the other issues which to be addressed. It not felt it is important
before? Public is paying the taxes and they are swalloing under scams.
Now public is also totally frustrated with the government.
Mr.Manmohan Singh wants the people of India to believe that the BJP or the opposition parties are diverting his attention (from his duty to the nation) by talking about the Coal Allotment scam.He had severely accused the CAG only two days and by doing so is conveying to the country that his or his party's actions should not be questioned.
We request Dr.Manmohan Singh PM and Congress and UPA to respect people's verdict to give corruption free RULE. Atleast listen to opposition and take action against corruption instead of criticising BJP
What tactics is he using by flying off to Iran for NAM summit when
entire parliament is stalled? It is like the "Pot calling the Kettle
black". Besides, the recent information that Rahul, Sonia have two of
the lowest attendance in Lok Sabha is revealing about Sonia's faith in a
democratic institution like Lok Sabha. MMS ji, even now, it is not late
for you to come clean on the Coalgate. Please redeem your image since
you have a good name as a Finance Minister and economist.
Tackling the problems of Poverty, hunger, disease!!! tired of hearing these statements from
our honest politicians again and again :-)When they will act ?
Mr.Manmohan we see , you dont have strengths, capabilities and wise people around you in
running a efficient government ,only output your govt has yield is corruption which spreads
like a disease .If we remove the root cause of this disease then poverty and hunger situation
shall be overcome
Pradhan Mantriji,
It's not about BJP or the Congress Party. It's about what's seems to be a gross violation of trust and abuse of power. That's what the CAG report implies. The best course for you is to constitute an independent and credible authority to investigate into the whole matter. Nothing else would arrest the momentum of the situation and you don't want that. The country would go through a turmoil for the next 20 months if you just deny the seriousness of what you are facing. It's still a peaceful process of outrage, protest and agitation. Please respond to it the way Mahatma Gandhi or Nelson Mandela would want you to. Relinquish power if you can't do that.
I wonder why we still need to have this - by now irrelevant - "Non-Aligned Movement".
Who are they not aligning with ?
The World Political Order that existed and necessitated this movment more than 50 years ago - is no longer there.
With India emerging as a major global power, it makes little sense for our Country to be a part of such formations which are relics of the past.
Mr. Singh needs to understand that corruption is also the part of enormous problems he is talking about. If he thinks that the country has done well at this point of time is shamed. The basic problem of India is poverty and hunger, isn’t corruption are the major contribution to this? He is saying that fighting against corruption is not a government’s fundamental task. When it comes to trust of majority, it has been given by considering to work towards all issues not making the corruption as a general odd issue.
Who is adopting diversionary tactics?BJP or Congress? When caught red handed by CAG in Coalgate scam,it is the Congress that is adopting the cheap tactics of challenging CAG's findings by it's own estimates. The funniest part is CAG itself is a part of Government. The party and it's elected members are none other than 'Aaaya Rams and Gaya Rams',whereas as CAG is a permanent body and only qualified auditors/accountants/administrators can hold the post. While any third rate can become an MP,certain standards must be fulfilled to hold a CAG position.Any third rate politician may pass a comment on any Govt office which catches them red handed as in 2G scam,Housing scam etc. They defend themselves & disown responsibility.Throwing the blame on communal tension, sluggish economic growth, heavy inflation, tax burden etc only indicate the present UPA has failed in all fronts.Hence PM must own the moral responsibility & resign immediately.
He has already lost his dignity. Every indian knows the truth that he and his party is corrupt. We want proactive, energetic, and visionary leader not a remote-controlled robot which rarely opens it's mouth.
The Supreme Court has already demonstrated its no non sense
approach by cancelling the dubious spectrum allocation.
So, we can safely assume that if the coal block allotment is
dishonest and/or arbitrary, the SC is certainly there to take
care of that aspect.
As regarding the stand off in Parliament, this is not the first
time that the BJP has stalled the house, nor it will be the last.
If Mr. hari's logic is right, 39 coal blocks allotted in bjp tenure without tender and even news paper advertisement are also to be cancelled. that is the right justice.
It is very unfortunate that still after 65 years of independence, we
are fighting poverty, hunger, disease, unemployment, power shortage,
food shortage, illiteracy etc etc ... The very basic need of the
people. However section of people who have been talking to eliminating
it for years do not feel even ashamed of promising it once again to
score high in voting. Pathetic !!!
What is the use of having GDP at 9% when the govt. is not able to
provide the basic necessity of the people ??
As a matter of fact, The govt. & the opposition should be
complementary to each other, but what happens here is completely
opposite. Neither the govt. nor the opposition is responsible for the
people, instead the people are responsible for both govt. &
opposition.
The trail of the money in the organizations to whom the coal blocks are alloted must be investigated. The PM can order CBI and CAG to investigate and clear himself. If he comes out clean, then it is government procedural errors. The government can correct them by cancelling the licenses and re-issue them via auction process.
What is the use of 9% growth when a grater proportion of the national income goes to a small section of the population. Several studies have pointed out that though the richer sections of the population benefited in the post-liberalization period, there has been a stagnation of incomes for the majority in all the states, with the bottom rung of the population severely negatively affected by this process. As a result, the average Indian is amongst the poorest of the world. Poverty is present everywhere in the country, although the nature and extent of poverty differs between rural and urban areas. Widespread abject poverty is a stark reality in the villages and cities/towns all over India. A number of studies, based on the National Sample Survey (NSS) estimates of household consumption expenditure, have shown that in the past decade or so there has been increase in inequality in India. As a result, malnutrition continues to be a scourge.
Maintaining the dignity of PM's office doesn't mean simply denying
his involvement despite being passed strictures against by him by
none other than the CAG a constitutional body in the COALGATE
issue. If it was a party other than congress, these very people of
congress party would have made a hue and cry demanding the heads
by ordering for a CBI probe in to the issue by now. From these
denials,it is very clear that the congress party had NO respect for
the constitutional bodies.
No one can save this great country if Prime Minister thinks that Mounavrath is a virtue even if his UPA colleagues are looting the country's resources to benefit the corporates and the resultant black money is stashed away to Swiss and other foreign banks by both partners in the loot. The dignity of PM's office is already in shambles with the exposure of 2G, CWG, and now CoalG which were presided over (with conniving silence) by that august office and Manmohan need not cover up his Mounavrath with some pious statements like this. Now no more fools are left behind in this country, Mr PM, to trust you.
Where silence is a bliss it is a folly to be vocal.
if Mr.Manmohan wants to maintain the dignity of PM office atleast he can cancel the alloted coal blocks and call for a competitive fresh bid.
