A large number of people protesting, under the aegis of India Against Corruption, against the coal scam were lathicharged and tear-gassed by the police when they attempted to gherao the residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and BJP president Nitin Gadkari here on Sunday.
Action on the streets of Lutyens’ Delhi began in the afternoon when, responding to the gherao call given by Arvind Kejriwal, the charged-up protesters proceeded towards Parliament Street from Jantar Mantar. Barricades failed to stop the marchers who faced little resistance from the men in khaki, most of whom helplessly watched the protesters head towards Parliament.
As planned, the protesters split into three groups on Rafi Marg. While one group led by Mr. Kejriwal himself marched towards the 7 Race Course Road residence of Dr. Singh, the other two were guided by his associates Prashant Bhushan, Manish Sisodia, Kumar Vishwas, Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh and others towards the bungalows of Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Gadkari.
Mr. Kejriwal, who accused the Congress and the BJP of being hand-in-glove on the coal blocks issue, and many others managed to give the police the slip but were intercepted on Akbar Road. With the protesters refusing to budge, the police used water cannon and lobbed nearly a dozen tear gas shells. As they held their ground, the policemen charged towards them with lathis. Several people were injured and they retreated. But they joined another group that blocked the way when the police tried to whisk away Mr. Kejriwal and others in a bus.
A similar scene unfolded near Ms. Gandhi’s residence, where too tear gas shells were lobbed to subdue the protesters. The high drama came to an end around 3.15 p.m. when Mr. Kejriwal announced that the protest was suspended. Nearly a thousand protesters who courted arrest were later released.
Addressing the gathering at Jantar Mantar earlier in the day, Mr. Kejriwal and other speakers debunked the “zero-loss theory” propounded by the government. They alleged that the allocations were made at throwaway prices to companies that had nothing to do with power generation and this despite repeated requests by the then Coal Secretary to auction the blocks. The speakers accused the BJP also of public posturing by only demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and not pushing for cancellation of the allotments and a fresh auction of coal blocks.
Mr. Kejriwal said the Central government should make public the names of all the Chief Ministers who had recommended names of industrialists for the allocations. “Names of the industrialists should also be made public,” he added.
While the protest was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Mr. Kejriwal and his five associates took the security apparatus by surprise when they turned up at the residences of Dr. Singh, Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Gadkari much earlier, around 6.30 a.m.
Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Gopal Rai were detained outside Dr. Singh’s residence, Mr. Sisodia and Mr. Vishwas were picked up near 10 Janpath, and Sanjay Singh and another team member outside the bungalow of the BJP president. The police kept them confined at the Mandir Marg police station for about an hour, but had to set them free after a large number of supporters landed there to stage a protest.
Detained in Mumbai
Rahi Gaikwad reports from Mumbai:
In Mumbai, a team of IAC volunteers was detained while leading a march against coalgate. The police registered an offence of unlawful assembly against IAC coordinator Mayank Gandhi and 40 other volunteers.
IAC spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon said IAC volunteers were leading a morcha in three batches to the Mumbai residence of Rajiv Shukla, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.
“We were around 70 to 100 volunteers. The police detained us for about two-and-a-half hours. Another group reached the house, but they were also detained. The police did not press any charges,” Ms. Menon said.

Dear Arvind Kejeriwal and dearly affectionate all supporters-men and women, children oldmen and women, all sections of people who think that the corrupt politicians and ministers and bureacrates of India have devoured lacs and crores of rupees of India by indulging themselves in corrupt practices and now you protesters have unitedly raised their voice against them deserve appreciation by one and all.Buck up ! Greediness is mental disease. It cannot be quenched. You will have to fight out these corrupt persons and free India VIJAY . .
It seems. We still are living in colonial times. Its evident that there is all out strategy to contain the movement.
Hats off to Arvind Kejriwal. We need people like you. Recently, I watched the movie 'the legend of Bhagat Singh'. I can draw some parallel between what has been showed in the movie and what is happening now in our country. People are totally frustrated with the government and its policy. Looks like there is no democracy but anarchy and if you dare to protest against the British government/ congress government/ BJP governement, you will be thrashed out or doomed to death !
It is sad that the members of team Anna are so indecisive as to oppose
only the Congress or the whole political system. Kejriwal is right
when he says that all political parties in power are corrupt there is
no difference between party X or party Y. They all are same. But most
of the Team Anna members are absent in today's protest march. We have
no viable alternative even to frighten the present lot of politicians
that change your way of functioning or people will reject you. Who
will we vote then? How many of the present lot of politicians are
honest and committed to the service of the nation? Perhaps honest
politicians are in a micro minority. The agitation of Team Anna has
definitely raised hope among the Indians who want an India free from
this all pervasive corruption. But it seems now the agitation is going
nowhere. A protest here, a fast there won't make much difference to
our thick skinned politicians. There must be a strong and effective
anti corruption body like the CAG.
BJP and Congress are the two side of the same coin and both rely on
communal politics. It was necessary to protest outside Nitin Gadkari's
House. The BJP has nothing to do with corruption and is only trying to
win vote on the corruption issues. If it come in power same will happen
as Gadkari reveal his politics by inducting Kushwaha and appointing
Sancheti as member of Rajyasabha who is involved in Adarsha scam and
coalgate
The country works more and more like a dictatorship. We are currently under a political Junta - who do not want change. The politicians are unwilling to take even small steps in improving governance. We have lost 8 years under the current congress dispensation. The BJp is no better and we all know their performance in Karnataka. The best way out is to communicate to the masses who vote them. Also in the absence of an effctive alternative, people have no choice but to vote these goons back to power. We should also write to world leaders requesting them to boycott these tainted politcians. Do not give them visas, ban them from world forums and try them in international courts
They all are scared mice .Mr. Kejariwal,if your objectives are right, true indians are behind you, please start your own news-papers that is in vernaculars. They are destined to be doomed.Long live Anna!Long live Baba Ramdev! Jay Hind!
"When Raj Thackeray takes thousands of his supporters without permission for a
protest, police provide protection. What kind of politics is this?"
Sir, this is goonda-raj. True in theory and practice.
British understood this very well-and controlled the millions with just a small
number of officers and indian servants.
The detention of erstwhile members of team Anna shows arrogance of
political class, not letting out the voice of anybody against them. After
all what's wrong in staging a peaceful gherao against corruption?
It is sad to see the situation ....similar to what Britishers did to freedom fighters...no difference. Anna says right white have gone and only brown have replaced them.
Politicians can rob our nation of 1.86 Lac crore & if you protest you will be arrested. Politicians will remain free, enjoying all luxary privilidges at the cost of common man.
Mera Bharat Mahan (& All Bharatvasi as well) - When will our blood boil on this open loot of our dear nation???
