With people from north east in panic following rumours of attacks, Union Home Secretary R K Singh on Thursday said there was no threat to anyone from the region living anywhere in the country and termed the reports of violence as rumours.
“There is no threat to the people of the north east in any part of the country,” Mr Singh told PTI here reacting to reports that people from the region were attacked in other parts of the country.
On reports of mass exodus of people from the north east living in Bangalore, Mr Singh said he had spoken to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Karnataka Police and they had informed him that there was no incident of attack on anyone from the region anywhere in the state.
“Last night when I got an information that some people from Assam were under threat in Karnataka, I rang up the DGP and checked up with him... There is nothing.
“When people thronged the (Bangalore) railway station to go to the north east, the Home Minister of Karnataka himself went there and told them that there is nothing. So the rumour mongering has to be stopped. Some people are spreading rumours,” he said.

People who were beaten and threatened have left or about to leave
the place where they living unsafe. This has never happened before.The
authorities should have sensed the impending violence and stopped it
before it became a conflagration.Delay in taking action costs us much
and the paranoia is understandable and many have left to their
hometown for safety.Home ministry should step up the vigilance and take preventive measures.The country cannot afford to make our states
a land of anarchy.The government should reassure their safety and
make arrangement for their return to the place of work and make the
situation under control.We can hope that our new home minister will
face up to the challenge.
It's a shame that rumours of such low level are being spread. Moreover, I do not understand how can our northeast brothers even believe in such a thing that they will be attacked in other developed parts of country just because of their ethnicity. And not only that, it seems that those who are fleeing back do not believe in the law and order of the country.
Panic has been spread by trouble makers. It is a clear sign of lack of confidence in the law enforcing agencies, which is not new . But the arrogance of people who are beating the N-E people in Pune or Bangalore is frightening. Media , Goverment and Civil Society have to come on one platform to defeat the trouble mongers.
If only our governments and police had had a track record of nipping violence,
particularly organized and directed at religious minorities or migrants from other parts of the country, then these assurances of the CM would have quelled the rumors.
Sadly, we have countless examples where policemen and leaders turn a blind eye or even actively abet violence against minorities, e.g. Modi in Gujarat, Shiv Sena/RSS im Bombay to name just a few recent examples.
Why should a person from the North-East take the chance of being hacked down by an irate mob? Yes! India is always just marginally away from collapsing into total chaos. Until and unless we manage to enforce a strict rule of law, and guarantee the ordinary citizen safety of life, property and rights regardless of the power, influence or affiliation of any malefactor attempting to infringe on these shall we be able to progress.
This is pure media created hype. they are just gathered to catch train. there are 3 new trains and they want to visit their homes and want to see if everything is alright , as now things are better .
