The Left parties will stage a five-day sit-in at Jantar Mantar here from July 30 to August 3 against price rise and to demand the right to food through a universal public distribution system.

The general secretaries of the four parties — Prakash Karat (Communist Party of India-Marxist), Sudhakar Reddy (Communist Party of India), Debabrata Biswas (Forward Bloc) and T.J. Chandrachoodan (Revolutionary Socialist Party) — will lead it.

A joint statement said rallies would be held in State capitals during the sit-in by national leaders at Delhi.

Among others, the sit-in would highlight the need to curb price rise and scrap BPL and APL and go in for a universal PDS. The Left parties want the government to give 35 kg of foodgrain at a maximum rate of Rs. 2 a kg per family a month and distribute the eight-crore foodgrain stocks by increasing allocations immediately.
