Nine years after acid attack, she still receives death threats
Nine years after an acid attack left Sonali Mukherjee blind in both eyes, partially deaf and melted away the skin on the skull, neck, chest and back, the 27-year-old is running penniless from pillar to post in Delhi for help from the government or permission for euthanasia.
From Dhanbad, where she was drenched with acid by three of her neighbours after having been subjected to years of sexual harassment, Ms. Mukherjee and her family abandoned their home after she started receiving threat calls from the attackers following their release from jail.
“The darkness of the night of April 2 refuses to leave our lives. Before the attack I was harassed and followed around for nearly two and a half years. Scared and frustrated, I complained to my father, who was a watchman in a mill. My father requested the boys to leave me alone, but to no avail. One night it came in the ugliest form – acid. My younger sister was also injured in the attack but she escaped with major injuries,”’ says Ms. Mukherjee.
Ms. Mukherjee approached the Ministry of Women and Child Development, which, in turn, forwarded her request for help from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
Running like fugitives
Meanwhile, Ms. Mukherjee and her father, now without a steady source of income, are shuttling between Jharkhand and Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. “I am alive and moving around because of the doctors at Safdarjung Hospital. But I lost my grandfather who went into shock after the attack, while my mother slipped into depression. The worst, however, are the continuing death threats that we are receiving from the attackers. They have now threatened to attack my sister and brother and kill my parents. We have been running like fugitives to escape them.”
Her last hope, she says, is government intervention: “If it doesn’t come through, I request permission to die.’’
We have received several offers of help from our readers for Shonali Mukherjee. She can be contacted through her brother Devashish Mukherjee @ 09437638600.
Keywords: acid attack, Sonali Mukherjee, blindness

Govt should provide protection to the family. And put these culprits to death as they have not learnt from their term in jail.
She can be contacted through her brother Devashish Mukherjee @ 09437638600. Her Bank account details are as follows
Bank of India, Branch: Bokaro, Kasmar, Jharkhand
480-7105-0001-2943
For foreign transfers one needs a NEFT IFSC code which I will post as soon as it is available.
I thank The Hindu to highlighing the plight of this girl on their website. However, this story should not stop here, I suggest that you provide the details of her bank account on the website.
I have been trying to search the account details of this girl on the internet but have not succeeded yet. If someone knows the account details, I request that be posted on the comments section please. I am sure there are patrons of The Hindu who would like to contribute. I have also noticed that foreign web publications also have readers who are interested to contribute, the Daily Mail UK has around 2000 readers who wish to contribute for her treatment and legal expenses.
India Shining Right! Now you would say that India has made Nuclear
weapons, Nuclear submarines, Missiles blah blah blah, and all this
for what for whom. If India cannot protect its own citizens in
Indian soil. Then who will? And in this case the criminals have been
let out already. Outrageous. Our Justice system is not about
Justice, it about making a fool out of the victims. I don't think
the convicts have been fined more than Rs5000 each. In Kerala, there
was a case where a girl was raped and killed after being pushed out
of a local train. And the convict was fined Rs15000 or less. I mean
a murderer gets fined Rs15000 only, though he was awarded the death
sentence. And his lawyer came from the Mumbai High Court!! In India,
criminals are set free, convicts contest for the elections,
criminals spend thousands on good lawyers. And irresponsible,
unaccountable, badly trained, good for nothing Police and Justice
department. That's what India is.
The Crime commited against Ms. Sonali Mukherjee is much more worse than
the suffering of Ms. Keran clin the bus Monitor in USA. Can not avoid
the comparison of events at USA and in our Country. Please guide people
like me to help her in an organised manner to help her.
Very much thankful to those who will mail me for further actions.
My heart goes out to her, but the fact remains that whatever we write here one can never empathasize with her.I am as helpless as her as the citizen of this country and i have the least faith in our system.
I just pray to god that she gathers enough strength to deal with this ordeal.Something's seriously wrong with our society today, newspapers full of cases of molestation, rape, sexual abuse against girls. What is even more disturbing is that the culprits are not even guilty or remorseful for what they have done.Such people deserve to suffer in hell for eternity.
This is very horrible. Worse than death. I agree with the readers who
suggest that acid-attack crimes should be given capital punishment and
their properties be confiscated. This should be done to everyone
involved in the attack.
Sonali needs justice as this is happening in our country frequently and we need to do somethning fr dis..nd i need support fr u guys...please come forward to help as it wilk give u immense pleasure and will save an innocent life.
Truely very appreciative of each and everyone's concerns and apathies!!
It makes me realize depite everything that human beings are still there and so the hope.
Proud of everyone's thougts and feelings and also The Hindu's crucial contributions....
I feel helpless but only hope these admant rascals understands...give her life back atleast what she is left with.....
And I wonder if the administratively capable people read this or not..
and if they do so....why on earth are they so inhumane and heartless!!!??
From the photograph I realize that she was an NCC Cadet. I believe that all the NCC cadets in the country donate Rs.1/- each it will amount to Rs. 13 Lakh. NCC Directorate in Delhi should take lead and as an NCC Army Officer, I will definitely initiate the process with higher authorities. Any small amount can be a helping hand for her to meet the daily expenses. All the NCC cadets should should stand with her and support her.
This is horrific! Our Government must come up strongly to intervene. The attackers should be punished.
I just talked to Mr. Devashish Mukherjee at the number provided at the end of article. I couldn't talk to Ms. Sonali Mukherjee as she was not present at home. The bank details provided by Mr. Devashish is as under:
Name of the Account holder: Sonali Mukherjee (spelling as provided)
Account Number: 480710500012943
Bank: Bank of India
Branch: Kasmar
Bokaro District
Jharkhand State.
Mode of sending (as suggested): Mail transfer
I request Ms. Bindu and Mr. Lokanath to please confirm the above bank details as provided by Mr. Devashish by calling at the number individually. Thanks.
Ms.Bindhu Shajan you have done a great job. Democracy means For the people, Of the people & By the people.Everyone is fighting for their seats & want power.Richer are getting richer poorer are becoming poorer.Set a Team so that justice will definitely come.I am really shocked how Sonali is living like this for 9 years. Justice will definitely come. From India each person contributes atleast Re 1.00 it will definitely will be in crores.Who is the person who is responsible & accountable for this that the money reaches safely & the treatment can be given & her life will be definitely saved after plastic surgery.100% sure even the hospital will give the best discount on her medical bills.
This all needs to stop. Sonali deserves justice and she should get it. It would be helpful if someone could post her account details so that some financial aid could be provided to her. It is devastating to know the goons who did this to her are on loose, this could be repeated to any girl if their actions are not checked. Aren't people who are threat to the society supposed to be put behind the bars?
We should appreciate Ms.Bindhu Shajan for bringing this to limelight, I am expecting Ms.Sonali's bank account details & I will update the same here on receipt of the same.
Anyway the Government is not going to do any favour to her which everybody knows, why can't we try to give her some financial assistance than commenting & criticising the government. I spoke to The Hindu Reporter Ms.Bindu Shajan who has brought this to our knowledge, she told me to speak to the victim and help her accordingly. I called Ms.Sonali today to get her bank details and she just spoke to me a few words and gave her mobile to CNN IBN reporter Ms.Smrithi as CNN is shooting her now. CNN reporter said that she will send me the bank details of Ms.Sonali. Generous people may please help her.
It is unfortunate we are destined to see a young lady suffering like this which is beyond description. I do not understand whether to blame God for such a bad incident or pray God for her dramatic relief. It is always believed nothing happens without his command and if so does God really expect people to see this kind of cruelty and help bad characters to learn the lessons of torture. I sincerely join all other sympathisers to condemn this dastardly act and
pray for her early relief.
Could not control tears rolling down my eyes after seeing Shonali's
present condition. The convicts should be hanged until death. They
should not be allowed to live amidst the common public and lead a happy
life when a whole family is shattered.
I will only second an emotion that has been expressed in these comments "Is there any way people can get in touch and organize donations for her?"
I spoke with Devashish Mukherjee apparently he has not received much
help yet, in case you are looking for Bank details it is
Bank -Bank of india
a/c -480710500012943
Benefactor- Sonali Mukerjee
I really am speechless, what kind of people are we nurturing ?!! everyone has already requested for complete justice. I would also like to know what can we collectively do to help Sonali and her family ...I dont know how much time would the govt and court take , but we would want to extend out a hand in support for you, please do let us know and we would do what we can!!
hugs and love to you!!
I thank Hindu for bringing this article and enable others to help
Sonali.
We are tired of media reporting an issue and moving on to the next story soon. I am glad that The Hindu has looked beyond this kind of shallow reporting.
The Hindu should start at least a weekly column where a major headline news of yesteryears is followed up and we get the latest on it. This ensures that the issue will not die from the national narrative unless it has been solved justly. If any happy endings could be reported, that will be an inspiration too for others to fight back any injustice in their lives.
This is really the worst thing that can happen to a person. It is
horrible to see that our law& order fails to protect this woman and
some uncivilized assailants(having sever psychiatric disorder which is a
real threat to the society!!) are doing whatever they want ..
India being the biggest democracy in the world but it is unfortunate on the part of citizens of India that such kind of heinous crime occur with them as has happened with sonali.it is more surprising that the guilty minded offender escape punishment even after committing such a crime.therefore it becomes necessary for the Indian judiciary to provide severe punishment to the criminals involved in such cases of like nature as happened with sonali.thus only justice is possible for the victims like sonali.
Why government is being insane in this situation. They should have
given lifetime imprisonment to those three beasts. Government
should implement strong laws to prevent such incidents, like
giving harsh punishments to the people responsible. They should
have in mind that they will not be excused at any cost if they
create such mishaps.
Right now it is the government's duty to protect the victim girl
and her family. The incident happened since the culprits are not
scared of the laws.
I appreciate Hindu for sharing this one and the contact details so
that we can give a helping hand.
This is heart breaking... What a severe torture for a young
girl.... It's worse than death. I agree with the readers who demand
that acid-attack should be given capital punishment with property
confiscation, whoever the criminal is or how many ever of them are
involved. And it must be strictly enforced and made totally
unpardonable (by mercy petitions etc).
Really heart-wrenching story .But my first question is how those goons
come out of prison in first place ? What government has done for her
rehabilitation ? Why don't government pay something to such people who
are living in fringes of society under constant threat ?
please do justice to this girl and the family. Where we are as a Nation heading. Please give her account details, we as community can help with whatever we want. Mr. Silent PM, please just stepdown. If it happens to your daughter, what do you do Mr. Mute ?
Crimes against women are increasing day by day!In places like Delhi and Bangalore women are scared to stir out after 7PM.If the honour of women is not safe, how can we call ourselves a civilised nation? I am afraid our law and order enforcement agencies and the judiciary have failed in their duty to create an environment where women feel safe.
I am surprised that no political party has raised the issue of crimes against women in Parliament!I think crimes against women is a more serious issue than price rise or cartoons in text books!
There was a time when nothing was more sacred than the honour of women in India. In Jessica Lal's case the assailants were put behind bars only because of the tireless efforts of the civil society and the media. I hope the media rises to the occasion and takes up the issue of attacks against women seriously and the culprits are brought to book and adequate compensation is given to the victim. I request Amir khan also to highlight this social problem in his series.
This News Should Have Received More Priority ........ Read the complete story .... We should raise our Voices, i am sure each and everyone one of us has a woman in our life (Daughter, Sister, Mother, Wife ) who we would like to protect and care for ...... Not only has she gone through hell, now her sister has been threatened with the same fate ........ The Crime commited against her is WORSE than Murder and the culprits deserve STRONGER PUNISHMENT .....
Since 1947 ,India is declared to be an independent nation."Independence" the word has lost its meaning if spoken in context with India.Rule of law would prevail ,citizens would have better rights and autonomy was the belief of Gandhi.Still there are 81 lakh cases pending with the courts as per a data collected in 2009.The number of police personnel per thousand is lowest in India.Unless the guilty are afraid that punishment will be meted out fast and investigations will be fair.Reforms in judiciary is required so that the rule of law would prevail. And i hope there would be no more Sonali.
Appreciate if you could provide some contact details with this article so that people who are interested in donating to help this girl can come forward and do the needful. I await your response.
India desperately needs to inculcate morals to its citizens. 3 neighbors
harassing a girl and then throwing acid and the threatening to kill?
What are those people - beasts? The poor girl has to endure so much pain
because of a country's education system inculcating no morals in its
citizens. I hope some body takes a strong view about this, other than
bringing up regular and insufficient stuff like policing and law!
I request you to come up with an article stating the legal ways in
which a person suffering due to social injustices could seek financial
help from the government.I know that NGOs and individuals can help. But
, I am ignorant about the facilitation by the government in this
regard . Such an editorial could help many people in need .
The incident is very bad and the fact that the individuals are
remorseless even after a jail term ,makes me question the role played
by jail in rehab. When the accused return back with vengeance , the
victims state becomes a concern .
Is there anyway to reach out to help Sonali
If Government cannot take action, Let the public take, I'm ready to stand by and support the women. there are more shameless things happening.Get lost government !
The point is what is the givernment, law and order doing. If they cant save people, why shoudl they even exist. Fundamentally in india, there is no value for human and life, clearly demand for human is less. Not just this incident but there are so many atrocities against human and mankind in India. If you can save your citizens, please quit powerful posts and join them as common man.
No reason most of the educated people want to setlle abroad and then you cry brain drain..
Bindu,
Is there anyway to reach out to help Sonali financially?
Atleast it can help for her Medical expenses.
My heart bleeds and tears do not step after reading such incidents happening with women in our country. What reply NRI all over the world will give to others if asked about such disgraceful treatment towards women. It is not only Government to be lamed but our society who does not stands to fight against such action. In olden days it was society who used to keep a watch and fight back to help the victimized person.Position was not that bad because of fear of social condemnation, bold public support and prompt action by police on the spot.
A request to the newspaper, that I consider one of the few remaining pillars holding in tact whatever good this country still has : please dont let this news get out of focus, follow up on what action is being taken and inform us readers on the response this poor woman is getting from the authorities
On this day when all i can read on media sites are horror stories, i
feel its important that Media up the ante and also provide a channel
through which concerned readers can contribute towards the well being
of the victims through monetary or other means. It would be great if
Hindu can give numbers of any NGO that is working with Ms Sonali so
that we can directly approach them to see how we can help.
The most disturbing aspect is that we, as a society, have been
desensitized to an extent where all the progress we claim to have made
economically, socially or politically stands neutralized.
Inhumanity is the only answer to inhumanity. India has to evolve a
criminal justice system which will be inhumane than Arabic countries. I
strongly support capital punishment for acid attackers but they should
not be hanged. Instead, they should be crushed under train's wheels in
full public view with uncensored media broadcast across the world. That
would serve an example to these bloody attackers and they would not dare
to even touch these helpless girls.
This is so unbelievably tragic and i have no doubt believing this can
happen to any woman in any part of our country. We need to act and bring
strict laws to prevent this from happening in the future and deter the
criminals who think they can go scot free after committing a heinous act
such as this. How does the woman live with dignity after something like
this? She should be given a government job one where she doesn't have to
interact with people or to make it ironic a job where she has to
interact
This is a heart breaking struggle of the girl and her family.
I hope government comes to her aid and help her and her family to live a respectable life. Also govt. has to take stringent measures and should increase the level of punishment for people who commit such crimes.
so sad....world such a sad place to live...
govt need to create a cell for these type of cases.
Pathetic to read this news. What happened to the perpetrators? I am aghast reading that those perpetrators are still agonising her and her family. Is there no one to take action against those criminals? No wonder Dhanbad is shown in such bad light in movies. It is really frustrating to see that girl's life spoiled like this for no mistake of hers.
To "The Hindu": I have high hopes on your newspaper. I would like to suggest you to start a specific division in your organisation which will be dedicatedly following up such criminal acts and keep the news in limelight until justice is meted out to the victims. This way, pressure can be built up on the respetive governemnt to take action against the barbarous humans creating such troubles.
who are these people? and yes, please allow this girl to quietly pass
on. This is why euthanasia should be allowed. Would you be willing to
suffer alongside this girl, and nurse her and help her? If not, stop
harping about the 'sanctity of life' and allow her to make her decision
regarding her life.
With the law and order crippling in India and more particularly in
underdeveloped places like above it has become common for us to
witness such shameful events. While on one hand India is boosting itself to be developed in coming years; her majority of people's lives are debilitating. There are so many loopholes in our system. Justice institutions are failing to provide justice to victims. Government institutions are not able to come with strong laws against such
people. Now its time to wake people and institutions from apathy, to grow not only in terms economy but in terms of morality. We have fundamental duty to respect each other and protect each of us from such derogatory society. I am reiterating our fundamental duty"to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women". Lets rise above our selves and come to help.
Such an event brings disgrace to the complete Indian society. Its a failure for the judicial and the police system whose punishment was not enough to change the culprits' mindset and make them acceptable in the society. Justice has not yet come to the poor girl.
What a day to start with such a horrible news which instant brought tears in my eyes. Where are now the Policemen or the so called Human Rights Association memebers hiding, who always shout in front of the media for each and every issue? The worst part is that the attackers are still free..!! No one can save this country if women are still treated in such a shameful manner. IS ANYBODY HEARING?
Definitely a shocking news or the worst form of human atrocity. I know, commenting here won't make any difference but still this type of incident makes you feel sad about the human psychology and their activities.
Govt.should immediately look into the matter and give govt.job to her
on humanitarian grounds. The culprits should be hanged.
Sometimes I doubt on Theory of evolution because I don't think we are living in a civilized society which is developing.Such a heinous crime and culprits are not only those boys who did this but the whole society.A cruel world in which no place for humanity.
What a pity! can she come to calm and good places in south and live as
God or Govt has no right to snatch her soul and will have to survive as
it is written in her Fore Head the thalaiezhuttu!
Will not India Govt do a complete destruction of such hooligans,
attackers; Oh the politics and law and order are hand in hand with them
so it is not possible; well let the people rise to the occasion .. even
Anna Haazare will fail in this attempt. She is right in getting out of
the world and re enter among good samaritans.
Part-II
The Hindu’s contribution to the social and economic issues of Indian women and to other issues (including the latest attack on a Burundian student in India) is highly commendable. Most of news papers should stop giving more space for semi-naked pictures of Bollywood and Hollywood actresses distracting young people’s mind from the real social issues such as the Sonali, and learn from the Hindu how to do Journalism without destroying its primary function of being the Fourth Pillar of Democracy.
Part-I
The ugliest and darkest side of the lives of women in Indian Democracy is reflected in the case of Sonali. This is one of many such cases of atrocities on women, especially on the women of the poor and working class. The shameful thing is that even after destroying Sonali’s beautiful face and exploiting her sexually in a cruel manner, ‘Anti-social Talibans’ in India are roaming around the country with smiles with the support of the Law and politicians. One can witness daily how some of Urban and rural rascals treat our women and children in public space. Women, especially poor women, are helpless creature without social and economic security; they feel insecure in this country, even with the Police and political institutes which have very low moral and social understanding of women.
This is horrific! Both the Jharkhand state government and the Government
of India must intervene, immediately. Also, the attackers should be
given the death sentence or at best, a life-term.
Dear Hindu,
The injustice meted out to this girl is unimaginable. She is suffering
so much that death has become the only option left. Is there any way
people can get in touch and organize donations for her?
How the convicted came out of jail and threatening her again in public. I want to shout out angrily for long.. I can just drop a comment. Atleast her little hope left should be encouraged and give her proper judgement hopefully.
It will be nice if you can provide a way for people who read this
article to help her financially.
Are we living in a human society or a jungle? How pathetic our justice system is that
these psychos are freely roaming around and administration is doing nothing!!
Shame on you!!
Come on, Govt.. at least honor her Right to Life and protect her dignity. Help Her!!!!
A cultureless, inhuman mob attacks a girl so badly and still they are allowed to live in this society so freely. Pathetic state of affairs.
“We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people,” Martin Luther King Jr.
what I can do is just sit and type these words......never felt so useless before...
End of Humanity.
Why are the culprits out from the jail and they roaming free. They should be dead by now or hanged them immediately. Is there a way to help this girl, I know I can not support her cost completely but every penny counts.
Why is the government sitting like a lame duct not even help her or her family to recovery from the trauma. Dumb government though they can not punish the culprits, at least protect them from these demons from any further problems and govt should not harass her by making her run from one corner to another corner.
Should thank the hospital people who are taking care of her.
Thanks
Law must be enacted making acid attacks a serious crime carrying death
sentence. In this case the attackers must be immediately arrested and
severely punished. Their properties if any must be confiscated. They
should be again tried and sent to jail preventing them from joining the
civilised society as they are not fit to live as human beings.
The govt's response is the decade-old one - a clucking of sympathy
followed by "We are considering a mechanism..." followed by a load of
useless rigmarole.
And whatever happened to that good old thing called "society"? I'm sure
that the area where she lives has more residents than her family and her
rapist neighbor family? Whatever prevented them from giving the rapist
thugs a good hiding?
This is an atrocious event. It proves beyond any reasonable doubt that
there exist two Indias - one where Chiddu eats ice creams and
politicians make it a personal prestige issue to maximize their
personal security cover and the other where the law of the jungle
reigns and each second of existence is a struggle. What is use of
having a fancy criminal justice system propped up by billions of our
hard-earned rupees if neither the Shield of the Law nor the Sword of
Justice are there to protect innocent citizens? Justice delayed is
justice denied, hasn't anybody in the entire Law and Order set-up
heard that? Why is it that our so-called justices are so bent over
backwards to maintain political correctness that they totally disregard the practical outcomes of their judgements? Why hasn't the
police protected her from harassment?
P. Mattoo, J. Lall, R. Girhotra, S. Mukherjee, A. Kumari - just how
many will it take to arouse the govt? Just how many?
Is there someway that The Hindu or some NGO can take care of her. Can we, the
readers, help her through some legitimate agency which will not swindle in her name?
It is indeed nice that The Hindu brings such things to light.
Its so sad, this is happening in India. Not that I am surprised, but saddened that no one is doing anything about it. I do not trust the
govt. or the Law, but the people, for very simple reason, they can be
next, that is what unites us, that is what united us even before 1857.
I guess she should approach some anti social elements rather than the
police ?
This is horrible. What is all those women and child ministry doing
swindling money. This inspite of a women incharge of the congress. She
can get herself treated in a US hospital secretly, becuase she is a
foreign national, while the India national is being forced from pillar
to post. Looking at her face, I cannot believe that the culprits have
been let out of jail already, whereas her loss is forever for her. only
9 years for depriving somebody disabled without vision.
Shame in country which want to become a global player ,that its own
citizens are treated with out respect
It looks horrible to see that our law and order system fails to protect the common man. Unless these kind of incidents will not happen. The culprits deserves death penalty or life time imprisonment. They shouldn't be allowed to come out of prison. The government should get her due help either providing a job in any government department or a by giving a financial aid for her family.
Worse thing which can happen to a women or a girl, why in this so
called civilized society people can act like this when we all talk
about equal status for women in society ? How we all can be so
heartless that even after seeing this condition nobody is willing to
lend a helping hand ? People would definitely want
stars(Bollywood/Hollywood) to perform for them or they party in high
end 5 star and deluxe hotels and they can spend lakhs and crores but
not some thousands to help the society or some people who are
suffering.Where are all the NGO's and what is the state government is
doing to help the victim ? Are they here only to fill their pockets
and do nothing for the society ? Government should come up and show
some support and strict action to be taken on culprits as even now
they have guts to threaten the helpless family and the girl. Is this
our system all about protect and shield the bad guys and push a common
(man) to a corner and let them suffer ?
This is outrageous! India shouldn't be a free for all. Government must act now and provide protection to the lady. Seems like 9 years jail term hasn't reformed them and the perpetrators need new more serious punishment.
The guys who did this still have the guts to continue threatening this poor Kid? Instead of the matter being taken care of by the local Police/Judicial authorities in providing justice and security to her and the local medical administration providing her all possible medical support, she has to run to DELHI for help?
And such a case has to reach the Prime Minister's Relief Fund? It just shows hows INCAPABLE our local public organizations are in delivering their duties.
And I cant believe how we as a society can go on with life as usual with such injustice happening around us?
In this dysfunctional Indian society, I can only HOPE that an institution like THE HINDU which is still demanding OUR institutions to perform their societal responsibilities to follow on this matter and keep publishing the case developments until this victim receives a chance for a decent life from the government and the crime perpetrators are punished.
What possible cause had led to the release of attacker? Who grants the
bails to such people, who on earth defends such a client?
Do we have a government running in INDIA, do we have Police( police
force. an organized civil force for maintaining order, preventing and
detecting crime, and enforcing the laws.)? Until a common citizen
struggles to exercise his basic human rights, until a common citizen
struggles to get basic amenities INDIA will never be a developed
country.
it is really pathetic to read this story. i also saw the story of young girl in guwahati where 50 men beat a girl publicly and tear her clothes because she went a bar.it is the means of independence, freedom and right that we got after independence on 1947. it shows the backwardness of our society. a criminal is able to hurt the person because of whom he was in the jail. what kind of work is police doing? government should intervene in this matter
This is appalling news. If there is no help even after media coverage,
then it really reflects on our pathetic attitudes towards those who
have been wronged and abused.
My heart bleeds to know that the justice system in our country lets
killers and murderers loose.
This is truly a sad day for India. This should never happen to anyone. A hapless citizen who was pleading for justice is now pleading to be killed; and we have a system where the President pardons rapists and killers. We should see justice for Sonali now...not days or weeks or months but right now. Enough is enough! Sometimes it feels like the armed forces should step in and bring discipline in this nation.
Shame on the Government of India to make India shameful ! Indians are being treated like worms and germs in their own country while women and children are treated worse than the germs ! What a shame and pity ! You call this India shining ? Incredible ?
No amount of Outcry in media or Facebook (dis)likes or comments to this article can do justice to this hate crime victim. The perpetrators should be treated on par with thrid degree murderers and should have never been let out of the jail. The IPC should be strengthed against cases like these, not even a million dollar compensation would have been enough for Sonali. I haven't seen the judgement of this case, but I am sure the judge would have not imposed a fine of more than Rs 10,000 on each of the accused and probably none of it ever reached Sonali. It is another shame to our society and our judicial system. Law ministry please take a notice !
When we talk about liberty of women and their role in society , some of
the Leaders in Govt can take a step to show an extended arm to show
respect for woman.
