In a new twist to the controversy surrounding athlete Pinki Pramanik, West Bengal Minister for Sports Madan Mitra suggested here on Wednesday that the police complaint against her could be the result of a land deal gone sour. Ms. Pramanik was released on bail from a correctional home here earlier in the day. The athlete’s neighbour had earlier accused her of being a man and having raped and tortured her.
“The State government had allotted three cottahs of land to several sportspersons and she [Pinki Pramanik] was one of the beneficiaries. The land is in an area of the city that is considered prime property,” Mr. Mitra told journalists at the State Secretariat.
Mr. Mitra said he did not know the exact details of the deal, but said Ms. Pramanik had entered into an agreement with a promoter.
“The land was given to Pinki for personal purposes and not for making profit. If she sold it off for making profit, it is illegal. Anybody who goes to the spot will see a five-storey residence coming up there. The name of the present owner can be found from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation records,” he said.
Mr. Mitra also dragged the names of the former athlete, Jyotirmoy Sikdar, and her husband Avtar Singh into the allegation.
Ms. Sikdar, a former CPI(M) MP, has been one of the most vociferous protesters against the manner in which Ms. Pramanik was being treated by the police when she was in judicial custody.

In our system Politicians can do anything. Whatever malpractices they did and how much wealth they amassed, nobody to question them. Once the land got registered in her name, as a commom citizen Pinky should have the right to sell or pledge it at a time of need. Government can't insist that she should live there until death.
This country needs a iron man,a complete clean up starting from the
bottom to the top before it is too late.
She should have sold her medals, that is not illegal.
So it ultimately turns out that the whole saga was orchestrated by the
government!
Adarsh Scam which has the involvement of political persons has no
action. But the scene is different for Poor sport persons. If
sportperson has only land how he/she can survive. How are they treated?
Only cricket players can do anything whatever they want. Is any
politician ready to compel the government to check the position of
government lands provided to Cricket players? Do it for all
sportpersons, MLAs, MPs, Government servants.
if the goverment gives play ground to cricketers like dilip vengeskar
who in return earns lakhs of rupees from the play ground in form of fees
and coaching where only rich peoples child can afford that seems to be
ignorned why??????????
he or she ,does not matter ,can make money by selling a govt gift.should it need a heinous process of gender determination ?
Sold land for profit? Nonsense:
It is sad that a Sports Minister has made such a comment. Although these sports persons are facilitated at the time of victory, they have little or no money for survival a few years after they no longer make headlines. I say, what is the use of such land when the sport person has nothing to eat. Its good that she had sold the land for the money.
Now what..Who are all involved in this. Treat a human like a human, an athlete honored
like an athelete, Treat all land grabbers as victims and why dont we start with the list of the
politicians..Why start with this athlete who just faced a big issue. The problem is all our
politicians and even justices hide behind their veils..Oh Did I say veil..They all have to be
tested for common sense and IQ ..forget their gender..
This new has left me confused. Isnt the use of ones property rights for profit considered "personal purposes"? I am unable to understand what is illegal with - Pinki trying to gain from the land by jointly developing it with a developer. She is exercising her right to the use of her property. What am I missing here?
