Athlete Pinki Pramanik, who was released on bail here on Wednesday, alleged harassment while in police custody and said that her hands and feet were tied when she underwent medical tests.
“I was given an injection when I resisted the medical test. I woke up and found that my hands and feet were tied…the tests were forcibly conducted, after tying my hands and feet, at a private nursing home,” she told journalists shortly after her release.
Ms. Pramanik was released from the Dum Cum Central Correctional Home in the morning after a district court in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas granted her bail on Tuesday, 25 days after she was arrested.
The athlete’s ordeal, however, continued even after her release as she had to wait for over four hours for the keys to her flat that was locked to be handed over to her on her second visit to the local Baguihati police station.
“I was harassed at the Baguihati police station earlier and I am still being harassed by them. I do not know why I am continuously being harassed by the police,” she said.
The athlete alleged that she was being framed in the case. “I was framed, there are still efforts being made to frame me…the woman is trying to frame me,” Ms. Pramanik said.
Ms. Pramanik charged that the woman who lodged a complaint against her used to do chores for her. She sought a proper investigation in this case. The athlete said that her father Durgacharan Pramanik had met the State’s Sports Minister and she would like to meet him in this regard.
MMS on the Net
The athlete’s father, who was with her during her release, said that it was a “shame” that a multi media service (MMS) clip of his daughter shot during her medical examination was circulated on the Internet.
While he demanded that those responsible be punished, the athlete said that she would speak to her lawyers on recourse to legal action.
Ms. Pramanik was arrested on June 14 following a complaint by her neighbour that she was a male and had raped and tortured her. She then had to undergo medical tests at a private nursing home, district hospital and later at the State-run SSKM Hospital.
‘A test’
Asked what was going through her mind when she was in prison, the athlete said she felt it was a test and that she would emerge a winner.
Ms. Pramanik thanked sportspersons and civil rights activists who stood by her in difficult times. “I thank all of them for doing so much for me. While in prison, I read about the protests in the newspapers,” she said.

Sorry, honestly I am not able to understand anything here Normally the gender of the child is known as soon as the birth takes place and that enters the records without making any further tests I dont know whether same method cannot be followed If even after extensive tests, if the medical men are not able to determine, is there a possibility such person can rape a woman? We read in newspapers, that victims of rape are generally referred for medical tests Was it done in this case, what are the results? Has the complainant been questioned to establish the crime? I request let this not be made into tamasha It involves self respect and human rights of the individuals Please be sombre in dealing this case
Forget she being an athlete, she is a human being...she too has a father, family, life and moreover a citizen of India like you and me. Why this? Frustrated with the way things are going in our nation, this cricket crazy nation!
i realy feel shame on our system, the way it handled this case.Think from the percepective of his father who has to live every bit of moment with humiliation and insult.we cant even imagine what would have been going through the mind of his Father whose daughter was a national pride just 30 days before and today has girl who MMS has gone viral on internet.
Dont understand the obsession with Pinki's sex nor the relevance about her Asian games gold. Did she rape somebody or not is the question? Yes, women can rape too.
Strenuous physical regime and the sports medication could bring hormone changes in athletes. People must not make fun of her health.
Does gender of the accused makes any difference in legalities of a crime?
Why was the gender test was done on first place?
The gender determination tests should have been done only if she holds her gender as a defense during the trial for sex assault charges. .
Terribly sad that they treat someone of mixed gender with disdain and disrespect.
Every institution reflects values that prevail in the Indian mind. We need to change the
mindset.
Its obnoxious. I do not think anyone can play international sports by
changing sex. And even if there is doubt, doctor should examine her.
There are equipment to test gender without shedding clothes and know if
it is a case of gender change. She should be treated with grace and
proper investigation should be followed for the victim as well.
why all chaos now, I think all Athletes go through a medical test before
going to any competition. What our doctors were doing at that time.
Let's put those doctors into custody and ask them what they have done. I
don't know how much time it takes to check for gender of a person. Shame
on us for all that is happening.
dear respected and the relevant police chief or the authority who could put his or her common sense and treat this citizen of ours with due respect and civility PLEASE! Whatever is the issue in this there is a proper and careful way to handle such things. We have seen in many instances either the senior police officers or the executive functionaries such as a district collectors have come to help in the utmost respectful manner! Come on gentleman; let us treat people as people!
ND Tiwari was caught with pictures of young women doing prostitution
while he was governor of Andhra Pradesh. Police did nothing. someone
claimed that ND Tiwari is his father. Police could not get simple blood
sample from ND Tiwari for years. But when it comes to ordinary Indian,
system would make hell for him.
Ms.Pramaniks travails have,it appears, just started.A land scam case is sought to be foisted on her.She is already facing rape charges.God knows what further cases are in store. And to think we are advanced so far as to reach the moon soon, but can't carry out a gender test for weeks on end.Ironical indeed.
And now the lady who accused Pinki for Rape should explain how was she raped... I am not sure how chromosome will do it, even if Pinki has some male chromosome. As I understand, if physical construct of a person is of a lady, then she is a lady and can not rape another girl. The idea of my writing is not to discuss such details, but I am wondering why chromosome test is being done to know if Pinki may have raped? Shouldn't the lady now explain how she claims she was raped and how she knows pinki is a man?
You have said a lot without reporting what matters. Have you even
considered that the accuser's charge of rape could be true and must be
investigated before calling Pinki a female? You have successfully swayed
readers' emotions by dwelling on police indiscretion.
This is so damn outrageous. There should be a case against the state
government and the Union of India, for forcing this kind of torture on
their subjects... make the state pay millions of dollars, every time
something like this happens...let part of it come from the direct
culprits, the rest the state has to pay. Let them realize there is a
cost to this damned high-handedness. This is happening is such a high
profile case, the fate of ordinary voiceless people can only be
imagined.
Mr Natarajan. Your comments are derogatory in nature. Grow up to global cultures and see beyond normal.
This way of treating national heros is outrageous. Police of India, this name realy doesnt suit to them by the actions they perform. This is simply disgusting and objectionable.
Its very shameful act on the part of every one involved in this case. Indian systems are very bad and treat athelets very badly hence you see very few enter games and sports but remember the treatment give to Sharook or cricketers is totally different. The next generation of India has to go through such barbaric act of local police/authorities. Enough damage is done but in India when they can not prevent it(anything) there is no use of doing postmortums. A sad state. Thanks,
I saw this news in the TV. I was horrified. In any civilised country this type of treatment will not be tolerated. Forcefully feeding or giving medication, restraining or examining a patient without consent will start off dicipilinary procedures by the medical council and the local police will charge one for assault.
Police are there to serve the public. It is a disgrace that instead of protecting her modesty, they took part or willingly allowed her examination to be video recorded and publicised. It is outrageous and it appears that the Indians have no credible system in place. No medical facilities to determine sex of a patient in time, manhandling patient if they do not co-operate, kangaroo courts and based on one's perception put a female along with men in jail!
The Govt should come down hard on all people involved and punish them.
Games are over, for her/his sake,it is better for her/him to get proper
check and get treatment to one or other.Just it has become normal in
that part of the world,to say "i'm framed",hope we will act as civilized
country. No cover up ,please, start,up front and factual,pl,Hindu follow
up.
It is a horrible that Not any Government Athority could search the reality of Pinki's sex in India and we are going to touch Moon.
A chromosome test is only a technical determinant of the gender. We often read of people changing their gender through medical treatment. The masculinity or femininity of a person is determined by the balance of hormones in the body. The chromosomal constitution of these people remain the same after the gender change. Pinky was born and brought up as a female. The world (including her parents and others close to her) have known her as a female all these years. She even represented her country as a female. To accuse her of being a male, irrespective of her chromosomal characteristic does not make sense. What she needs is proper counseling and medical treatment -- her hormonal balance could after all change with time.
Mr Natarajan, you seem to have missed the past half century's radical thinking about the social construction of gender. Your mind is probably already made up, but if you have the openness one expects from a reader of the Hindu, I suggest you read up on some of that literature before passing virtual judgment.
This is outrageous. An athelete who has brought laurels for the country has to go through such an ordeal after being accused falsely. If such things continue,I doubt if anybody ever will want to do something for the country in atheletics. As it is the government has least respect for sportsmen/women who toil hard and fight against all odds to reach such levels in sports apart from cricket.
Those who are suspecting Pinki of her gender can only point fingers at others and have no other work. These worthless people are pulling India down. I hope Pinki gets the courage to continue with her practice after undergoing this inhuman treatment.
I am shocked by the way how sports heroes are handled in this country. India rarely wins a medal in its olympics and even those atheletes who represent are so badly humiliated that it shows a negative picture to the next generation. If any cricketing heroes are involved in a rape, the media supports and the convict escapes. Cricketing heroes coult be a rapist or can bribe bookies or can even take money to lose games but they are always shown as heroes whereas in other sports especially during the time of representation in olympics such issues happen. Its humiliating to me as a citizen of this country
Shame on our goverment that could not determine sex of an Asian Games gold medallist in 25 days. this is the working of indian system.
Sir, The fellow in photo Mr Pramanik is having the look of a male acting like a female .... through medical check up.... and sue him and the Govt of WB.
