Ansari’s term ends on August 10

The Vice-Presidential poll, if necessary, will be held on August 7. The notification will be issued on July 6, the Election Commission announced on Tuesday.

The term of incumbent Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, who is also Rajya Sabha Chairman, ends on August 10. Mr. Ansari is the 12th Vice-President.

The poll will be held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on August 7 and counting of votes will be taken up on the same day at 6 p.m. The last day for filing nomination is July 20 and on July 21 the papers will be scrutinised. July 23 is the last date for withdrawal of candidatures.

The Vice-President is elected by the members of the Electoral College consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The nominated members of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha can also vote.

The Electoral College consists of 790 MPs — 233 Rajya Sabha members (plus 12 nominated MPs) and 543 Lok Sabha members plus 2 nominated MPs.

The Election Commission has appointed Lok Sabha Secretary-General T.K. Viswanathan as the Returning Officer for the poll and two officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat as Assistant Returning Officers.

Each nomination should have 20 proposers and 20 seconders from the electoral college.
