The nomination papers of P.A. Sangma for the Presidential poll were on Tuesday accepted by the returning officer after scrutiny.
The nomination papers and related documents were in order and were accepted by Returning Officer V.K. Agnihotri, who is also Secretary General of Rajya Sabha, officials said.
Some objections like anomalies in the list of proposers and seconders were raised by certain individuals against Mr. Sangma but these were rejected by the returning officer, they said.
The scrutiny of the nominations for the July 19 poll were to end on Monday but objections raised against Mr. Sangma and UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee prompted the returning officer to defer these two cases till Tuesday.
Mr. Sangma had demanded rejection of Mr. Mukherjee’s nomination under the Office of Profit rules, claiming that the former Finance Minister was the Chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).
Mr. Mukherjee has been given time to reply to the complaint and there will be a hearing on the issue later Tuesday.
The government has rejected Mr. Sangma’s claim, saying he had resigned from the post of ISI Chairman days before filing his nomination papers. “He (Mukherjee) had resigned as Chairman, ISI, on June 20, a week before he filed his nomination (on June 28),” according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister P.K. Bansal.

Sangam knows that he will loose in the Presidential elections based on the available statistics but still he has confident to win. I appreciate his confidence and approach to fight without bothering about final outcome.
My support is for Pranab only because of his long political career.
I feel Mr. Pranab is right candidate for the position. Pranab has good knowledge about Constitution and hope he can take at least some decisions independently.
ALL THE BEST TO SANGMA AND PRANAB....
WAIT AND SEE UNTIL 19 JULY 2012 TO KNOW OUR NEW PRESIDENT
I don't really see any point in having open debate for Indian president. It's only thughS and thieves are eligible to vote, there is no point in having a debate.Only when the ordinary citizens are allowed to vote than only we can see the merits and demerits of the individual candidate.Even in general election we Indians always vote for the most criminal person rather than honest and integral person, hence the democracy in India is a joke.
Like the system at United States of America, Mr. Sangma called Mr. Pranab for an open debate to prove their individuality and capability for presedential post. Why not Mr. Pranab take up this challenge?
Best Wishes Mr. Sangma!
If Mr. Mukherjee had resigned from ISI Chairmanship on 20th June, had it been accepted, and if so, when? A true picture must be given to the public.
Time to rethink the (presidential) election process. The members of the electorate should have the opportunity to vote AGAINST a candidate, and a vote for/vote against statistics should be accounted while deciding the winner.
Many times it happened that just out of luck some people got elected in elections, though majority would have never elected them. Now that election process is mechanical, it is easy to implement the VOTE AGAINST proviso to the process.
