Amid the rift in the National Democratic Alliance over the Presidential election, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) on Friday appealed to each other to review their decision on the issue of backing Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for the post.
“We also appeal to the BJP to back the candidature of a seasoned and experienced politician like Pranab Mukherjee so that a person with intelligence and commitment to the Constitution and Parliamentary democracy occupies the chair of President,” senior JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari said.
He was responding to the statement by BJP national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, who said, “We appeal to the JD(U) and the Shiv Sena to review their decision to support Mukherjee in the Presidential poll and instead back NDA nominee P.A. Sangma in the election for the top Constitutional post.”
The split in the NDA over the Presidential nominee came out in the open on Thursday, with both the BJP and JD(U) addressing separate press conferences on the issue.
While the former announced its backing to Mr. Sangma’s candidature, the latter declared in unequivocal terms its support to Mr. Mukherjee.
JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, who is also the NDA convener, had, however, sought to make it clear that supporting the UPA candidate does not mean that it will have an impact on the future of the NDA and that the anti-Congressism of his party will remain.
Mr. Yadav had said that his party was supporting Mr. Mukherjee’s candidature as it feels that after A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s exit from the race, there is no point in the contest and that there should be a consensus on the President’s election.

Mr Yadav, if your loyalty is to the people of the country, then you should consider their disgust with the UPA before taking big decisions. Your point, that the President ought to be elected with a wide consensus so that he has credibility would have been true had the country not been sucked into a maelstrom of devastation as it has been courtesy of this UPA. The dissidence shown to Mr Mukherjee will be a necessary shock to the UPA that will force it to improve its performance. The govt won't fall, only the UPA candidate will have his credibility eroded. Therefore if you see sense in maintaining an anti-UPA alliance, you will not give any credibility to their candidate.
JDU should try to understand the writings on the wall by the people.People are willing to overthrow all the tints of this failed Congress Government.Pranab is the main cause of the failure of the Congress Government.JDU should respectably support the candidature of Sangma.Days are not far away.People will show the doors to this kind of casteist politicians who speak one thing in the morning and another in the evening .
When the arithmetic is not in his favour Sangama should not be keen to face certain defeat. Also, BJP should display wisdom by not opposing UPA candidate and set a healthy precedent of the opposition party supporting the ruling party in a cause that merits support and thus contributing to consensus.
Mr Sangma should be congratulated for contesting the presidential elections.Whatever said about Mr Pranab Mukherjee,he is after all a nominee of congress[Sonia] and he will be no different from Mr.Manmohan another nominee of Sonia.By his commission, omission ,indifference and indecision,Mr Manmohan has brought the country to the brink of disaster. Now the duo will do this job.
Mr.sangma will act independently any thing which comes to him. whereas Mr mukerji will be loyal to Ghandi& congress.though he is a gentleman. He will try to dissolve ADMK Govt.showing the gesture to DMK.
