Terming as “appropriate” the decision by her favoured candidate A P J Abdul Kalam to pull out of the Presidential race, the Congress on Monday renewed its appeal to Mamata Banerjee to back UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee.
In an apparent move to mollify Ms. Banerjee, the AICC also snubbed party general secretary Digvijay Singh, who had dubbed the Trinamool Congress supremo as “erratic” and “immature” and had given signals that the party’s patience with her was running out.
“Digvijay Singh is not officially authorised to speak on behalf of the party,” the AICC said in a media release.
The Congress also hailed Mr. Kalam’s decision to opt out of the race as “appropriate”.
“Former President Kalam is a very distinguished person. We have highest respect for him. We hold him in high esteem. If in his wisdom, he has taken a decision, it must obviously be an appropriate decision,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
Referring to the statement on Mr. Digvijay, Mr. Tewari said messages are sent by the AICC media department according to party directive.
He dubbed as “resting on erroneous assumption” questions over Congress’ options if Ms. Banerjee walks out of the alliance.
He said the party “would like West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader to support the candidature of Mukherjee”.
Mr. Tewari also pointed out that Pranab Mukherjee described the Trinamool Congress chief as his sister and had made a personal appeal to vote for him in the Presidential election.
SP in UPA?
Replying to a query, Mr. Tewari dismissed as “very hypothetical” questions regarding Samajwadi Party joining the UPA ahead of the Presidential polls and said our appeal to all parties is for support to Mr. Mukherjee’s candidature“.
He also condemned Team Anna attacking Mr. Mukherjee saying it was “indeed very unfortunate that some people have got into the habit of making allegations against distinguished and senior leaders, who have spent decades in public life”.

It is indeed a good move by Dr.Kalam. Since, it will be very difficult for him to win against UPA supported Mr.Mukherjee. Otherwise he might need to face the great embarrassment, if he lost in the contest.
NDA is surely in a lurch. Having this kind of response from the toughest competitor ,it put a question on NDA'S policy now. On the other side it is a wise decision by ex prez after scrutinizing each and every aspect. It is clear from the fact that mr. mukherji is going to resign as finance minister.Now everyone has an eye over upcoming acts of BJP. NDA has to make a very difficult choice either to stick with mr. sangma or choose a new competitor. It does not seem that mr.kalam is going to reverse his decision now. It is also going to effect their policies and state for the biggest marathon . In my view they should think to make a way out otherwise their is going to be written by UPA. Our PM is the best diplomat in UPA. He knows after this kind of exposure by scams how to maintain the position and he is doing exactly that. It seems to be happening because neither the opposition looks strong nor their candidature.
Whether it is Dr.Kalam or anyone for that matter,it is time we all thought of the efficacy the office of the President, since it is a mere ceremonial office, a rubber-stamp, who can do nothing but take salutes, return the Bills referred only once and sit on mercy petitions endlessly, while touring the world!!! It is a drain on the exchequer!! Alternately, let the constitution be amended to vest more powers on the President with proper checks and balance (from a coup!)
Seeing all these comments over the Presidential candidature, I am now assured that we Indians are tactless, factless, naive and emotional in our thinking. Its very sad cause I am also a part of this mob. Most of us are race horsed seeing only straight. Common people, just think before you act. Open your senses, not only your eyes and don't blindly play the blame game. Please...

While it would be personally disappointing to many Indians like me to know that Dr. Kalam has decided not to contest the presidential election, one must also know the fact the Dr. Kalam does not take whimsical decisions nor is he swayed by emotions. He takes his job seriously & knows what is to be done. Seeing the political situation of the country & his chances of getting elected being less, he has taken the right decision. His decision reminds me of the following couplet of the Thirukkural which says, "Decisions should be taken after thorough consideration. But once a decision is taken, there should be no going back on the same." And Dr. Kalam has done just that ! Even if Dr. Kalam does not occupy the presidential chair for a 2nd term, he will continue to rule our hearts as the 'People's President' forever.
Going thru the various opinions, one may doubt if India has adopted the executive Presidential form like in the USA. Some comments seem too fairy tale type dreaming that a person in Rashtrapati Bhavan can make all dreams come true. Reality is much different friends...
It is indeed a right decision by Dr.kalam not to contest. He should get elected unanimously otherwise it is wise to opt out. Sanjeev Reddy was a good President but some body wrongly mentioned. Dr. Kalam got a an opportunity but he did not do much as a President bringing any changes to the country. He lead a simple life even as a President. Perhaps he would like to finish in this term some good work unfinished during his earlier tenure. Any President in this country can not do anything because our constitution has made him powerless. Hope, Parliament will woke up and pass good laws for the welfare of the majority like good roads, transport, power, employment etc., and also eradicate corruption at all levels from peon to PM. No reservation to be given to creamy layer which earns more than 3 laks per annum or give reservation to every one who are below the poverty line..

I can remember when Mrs.Sonia Gandhi win the last election and going to became Prime Minister of India, that time Mr. Subramanian Swamy oppose her as a Prime Minister candidature and write a letter to Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam not to accept he candidature as per India and Italy constitution. If Mr.Pranab Mukherjee will became the President India then I can forecast that in next election i.e2014 if congress will win, Mr.Rahul Gandhi can became the Prime Minister of India because Mr.Pranab Mukherjee know how to tackle the opposition and manage the constitution law.

According to our Indian constitution, one person cannot hold two office of profits. In that case Mr. Mukherji (if elected) as president has to resign from the post of M.P and also has to quit his Finance portfolio. What happens to the people who have elected him as thier representative, people who have trusted him? Its quite clear that president should be an Apolitical person. What has happened to our country people? Can anyone file a PIL against such malpractice? I strongly deny this drama which is making a mockery of our sovereign. However Mr. Kalam seemed to be prudent in his decision, but considering Mr. Mukherji for presidential candidature is itself a blunder. No doubt why POLITICS is always used in its derogatory sense.
The job of the President arises only during a constitutional crisis. The knowledge the President has of constitutional issues is secondary. He will have many advisers. But the President should make the right call based on all the advise. Under normal circumstances the President is called a 'rubber stamp'. But I feel the right President can dampen outrageous moves by making his mind clear. If the move makes sense for the common man, it would be impossible for the Government to use him / her as a rubber stamp. It is from this point of view that I will suggest a Presidential candidate be chosen. Candidates put up by the major party without striving to gain acceptance of the opposition are a shame. If a constitutional amendment requires 2/3rds vote, why should the President be elected with a simple majority. I would say the President should need 2/3rd of the votes to be elected. This will force parties to look for neutrality and acceptability.

Extremely unfortunate that crores of citizens have no direct say in choosing the first citizen , who they consider as eminently suitable with impeccable integrity and inherent capacity to enhance the dignity of his office, like Dr. Abdul Kalam. Barring a very few notable exceptions , the dignity of the office of the President has systemmatically been brought down in India. Amidst all the 'tamashaas' going on for almost a week , the common man nurtured a slender hope that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.His hopes have been belied. Who is going to restore the lost glory of President's office, now that Dr. Kalam has opted out ?

I have great respect and regard for APJ. He has glorified the post of the president. But, I truly feel that Kalam has an inclination towards the seat as is quite evident from the statement "considered the totality of the matter and the present political situation, and decided not to contest." What can be inferred from the preceding is that if Kalam had smelled victory, he would have contested.

Exactly what makes Kalam be the object of benefit of all this hysteria now is not clear. But it is good thing he doesn't want to stand. Hope he doesn't change his mind like the Indian Govt does after rising petrol prices. My choices for President would be Gopal Gandhi (political mind with good integrity) or E Sreedharan (leadership in infrastructure development and high integrity).

There is a silver lining on all these. Over the course of decades the thinking of the presidential contenders have been so transparent that different political parties have favoured different contenders. Evidently the contenders for the highest office have not said one thing and did another thing with the view to deceive the electorate. Former President Abdul Kalam has done himself and the country a favor by withdrawing from what threatens to be an acrimonious contest. Having enjoyed universal acclamation in his career, Dr. Kalam deserves the same in retirement. Controversial assignments at home or abroad should be avoided. It is unfortunate that the convention of a bi-partisan candidate has been dropped. Pranab Mukerjee as a senior politician is bound to attract many friends and inevitably some adversaries. That the latter should come from his home state is unexpected and unusual, but the mercurial Ms. Mamata Bannerjee is an unusual personality. If the BJP agrees, a Pranab-Sangama ticket, though weighted to the East, may gather near-unanimous support. It might bring to boil the inner contradictions between TMC and Congress, but such a contingency, it appears, would have to be faced sooner or later.
The whole world knows that 'THE GREAT COUNTRY INDIA' is democratic HAHAHAHAHA but we indian know we are fooling them. Mukherjee may do some justice to the post of President but not with the millions heart who wants to see Kalam as our beloved President. Both of them are not going to do any miracle by holding that post. But chosing Mukherjee in place of Kalam is certianely not justice with the Indian diaspora.
Although it pains me to see that Dr. Kalam will not be the president of India once more, I admit that the great man took a great decision. As always, the wishes of the people have no weight with the current government and hence it is so - interests of the nation, it seems, have no priority. Shri Abdul Kalam is a perfect embodiment of the grace and dignity that should accompany the President's office. The opposition has lost a perfect opportunity to show a united front and humiliate the Congress party. Though Mukherjee is the best choice for the President's office, an opponent like Kalam would have definitely generated a lot of support among the common man. Moreover, even if he had lost, it would have generated a lot of disregard for the Congress party. Shri Kalam has once again shown that he is above petty politics and he is a true statesman. He has once again stalked a claim to be the best President India ever had. Mamata Bannerjee would have been much better off if she had supported Shri Kalam rather than raising such an absurd idea of Shri Manmohan for the President. Rather, if she had supported Shri Kalam, the Congress would have also been in a bit of a quandry and considering the political climate, maybe we would have seen Shri Kalam in the President's office.

I see no reason as to why shouldn't we support Mr. Mukherjee, he is a veteran politican, he is a man who has won elections upholding the dignity of the law of the land. Would have been much better if only he had opted out of the race the very moment his name started going rounds in the country.It looks as if he also had an inking to occupy the Raisina Hill again, given a chance.In this issue he also acted like a cat on the wall watching the developments and only after being convinced of his sure defeat if there was a contest,he has now stated that he is not in the fray.In his own words he has asserted that he has taken this decision after looking at the issue in its totality and in view of the prevailing political situation!.While this is the clear reason for him to back out from the race,where is the question of this being a conscientious decision as claimed by him? I sincerely feel even if there was a slender chance for him to win the race, Kalam would have definitely preferred to contest the election. No doubt we have a great respect for Dr.Kalam and it is better we put a stop to the Kalam episode as far as the Presidential preference is concerned.

The selection of presidential nominees has become a complex one.There are a lot of hidden agendas.Some one who has looted govt money wants to come out of CBI net.His political rival in the state also has the same agenda.She has to be in the same camp.Some secular champion,even while sharing power with 'communal' elements,wants to be seen as differing with his partner to remain in power.A king maker is forced to nominate a person whom she doesn't trust.The Drama will continue.Corrupt regime will continue.
I think it was the talk of Hamid Ansari being offered a second shot at Vice-Presidency in the interests of Muslim vote bank preservation that disgusted Dr Kalam. He carries a lot of weight but he is no street fighter. Normally he would have posed a real threat to the credibility of Pranab Mukherjee as President, since the President's credibility depends partly on the depth of his electoral strength. I wouldn't put it past the Congress with its array of stalwarts like Digvijay Singh and Kapil Sibal, not to mention Chiddu, to have LEANED on Dr Kalam not to contest so as to split the opposition votes, clearing the way for Pranab Mukherjee.

Now that the best candidate has refused to contest, all parties except Congress should support the second best candidate i.e. Shri Sangma. Leaving the field open for Shri Mukherjee, a tainted person as per the Anna team, is not good for democracy in India.
I salute Dr Kalam for his right decision to become President of Bharat by contesting and canvassing support. The political parties have unnecessarily dragged his name without his consent and caused avoidable embarrassment not only to the great Scientist but also to the scores of his admirers. At the same time, had he become a candidate by consensus, our country, particularly, the next generation, would have greatly benefitted under his leadership and Dr Kalam would have been hailed as an avathara of Vivekananda at the present moment of country's turmoil both economically & morally. It is beyond any doubt, Dr. Kalam would have been our President if all the political parties agreed. Because, this is an indirect election by the MLAs' and MPs'. So, in spite of the common peoples wish HE is not going to contest. Had this been a direct election we are sure he would have got at least 75p.c.votes. If congress had initially proposed his name BJP may not have supported him as he is a non political person. These parties are interested in an individual only if it serves their interests.

Nevertheless, he has made a good decision by refusing to yield to temptation, by declining to 'contest' the presidential elections. Mr. Kalam would contest only when there is surety about his victory. Basically he doesn't want any contest. He should have said 'no' from the beginning. Is he testing the water before entering? That doesn't go well with his stature.

I am not surprised with Dr. Kalam's decision on opting out of Presidential Post. Rather as per his earlier stand of greater political concensus, he should have immediately cleared this once congress proposed Mr. Pranab Mukharjee's name. the only reason behind his set back was fear of loosing owns credibility by loosing the election. I also don't know why our young generation is over enthusiastic on re-electing Kalam for the president. He is a well respectable scientist no doubt but during his earlier term i dont find any achievement as President except getting clicked with school children and having tea at some dhaba. What was his pro active action when Country saw most brutal riots in Gujarat? or any tough decision he took during his tenure?

dr kalam cleared his stand at the very beginning. it was clear that after mulayam's reversal, gaining 51 percent vote is impossible, still then some politician's voluntarily appeal and campaigning in favour of kalam, ignoring his stand. i could not understand how these people became so big politicians. Dr Abdul Kalam Azad is a giant among pigmies. Like Mahatma Gandhi, he doesn't need any official position to rouse nation's conscience.
